If you can tear yourself away from the beach, exploring the wineries in Cyprus is one of the best things to do on the Island.

While Cyprus is known for its gorgeous weather, turquoise water, and white sandy beaches, the vineyards in Cyprus are somewhat of a hidden gem.

Secluded within the hills of the Troodos Mountains are the seven main wine routes, where you can discover some of the best Cyprus wines and take part in excellent wine tasting.

I spent almost 4 months in Cyprus and loved sampling some of the best Cypriot wine while exploring the wineries in Cyprus.

I based myself in Limassol during my time here, which is a fantastic place to adventure into the mountains and have a few glasses of the good stuff.

In this blog post, I’ll fill you in on some of my favorite wineries and wine-tasting experiences in Cyprus.

While these are my favorite wineries that I visited during my 4 months in Cyprus, I’ve also taken into account other reviews too, so you can rest assured that these are all excellent options to try some of the best wine in Cyprus.

1. Lambouri Winery (Best Winery in Cyprus Overall)

The Lambouri Winery is regularly awarded as one of the best wineries in Cyprus. So, it’s the obvious starting point.

Lambouri is located in Kato Platres, in the heart of the wine-growing region of the Troodos Mountains. The Lambouri family has been growing wine in the region for over 300 years -they know what they’re doing!

There’s a large, modern tasting room designed to maximize the customer experience, together with a beautiful courtyard to sample their delicious wine.

They produce both red and white varieties, and their grapes include Xynisteri (white) and Mavro (red). These two grapes are combined to produce Cyprus’ most famous wine, Commandaria.

Commanderia is recorded as being the oldest named wine still in production, and Lambouri produces their own Commandaria called Apollonia.

Lambouri also produces its own gin and whisky and these are definitely worth a try as part of your trip to this incredible Cypriot vineyard.

2. Tsiakkas Winery (Best for Incredible Views)

This superb family-run winery produces some of the very best wine in Cyprus. It’s located in Pelendri in the heart of the Troodos Mountains and its vineyards produce over 200,000 bottles a year.

The views from the winery are incredible and create the perfect setting for some of my favorite wine tasting in Cyprus.

Tsiakkas hosts excellent wine tours of their winery. During the 1-hour tour, you’ll explore the winery and learn about the philosophy and history of their winemaking with a friendly and knowledgeable guide. The tour costs €7 per person.

You can then sample some of their famous wines in their beautiful tasting room.

A curated tasting set of three dry wines with Commandaria and Zivania is €8 per person. If you prefer to try three of their older vintages of Cabernet Sauvignon, then it’s €20 per person. Delicious platters of meat and cheese are available for €15.

I definitely recommend taking this tour. You’ll get a real understanding of the passion and dedication put into producing the incredible wines produced by Tsiakkas. And you’ll work up a thirst, just in time for your tasting.

3. Ayia Mavri Winery (Best for Sweet Mosxatos Wines)

The beautiful Ayia Mavri winery is a family-run vineyard located in the foothills of the Troodos Mountains.

Located in the traditional village of Koilani, 45 minutes from Limassol, historically every house in the village would have its own small vineyard and homemade wine. Ayia Mavri has grown from these humble beginnings to a winery that now produces over 50,000 bottles per year.

Ayia Mavri is famous for its sweet Mosxatos wines, which you have to try. They also have some excellent reds – I especially love the Shiraz.

A tour and tasting will cost around €5 per person, although you’ll get the tasting for free if you end up buying any wine, which is sold on-site and is of superb value.

Alternatively, take the fantastic Grape Escape day tour to visit Ayia Mavri and Linos wineries (along with other fascinating stops). The tour starts from either Paphos, Larnaca, or Limassol. This is one of the best things to do in Cyprus and I highly recommend it.

4. Zambartas Wineries (Best for an Authentic Artisanal Winery)

Zambartas is one of the best artisanal wineries in Cyprus.

This boutique father-and-son-run winery has established itself as one of the most pioneering vineyards in Limassol. It currently produces over 120,000 bottles a year and comprises 13 hectares of vines. The grapes are tended to organically.

This beautiful winery is located in the small mountain village 25 minutes north of Limassol. Its rolling vineyards are split by traditional stone walls restored by the team and create a beautiful setting for some wine tasting.

Zambartas offer a great range of wine-tasting packages for all tastes and budgets. The single vineyard tasting offers a tour of the winery before sampling some of the best Cyprus wines that Zambartas has to offer.

The tour, tasting of 5 wines, and a meat and cheese platter costs €17.50 per person and last around 1.5 hours. Alternatively, try 3 of Zambartas’ wines at their vineyard for €5 per person.

5. Fikardos Winery (Best for Award-Winning Indigenous Wines)

Fikardos Winery is a family-owned winery located in the Paphos area of Cyprus. It produces wines from indigenous grape varieties like Xinisteri, Maratheftiko, and Yiannoudi as well as international varieties.

Fikardos has acquired an impressive series of awards over the years; in particular, their Fikardos Xinisteri white wine has won gold standard recognition at Gilbert & Galliard and London Awards in 2022.

For lovers of red wines, the Fikardos Maratheftiko also won a gold award at Gilbert & Galliard in 2022.

You can take both a tour and a tasting at Fikardos winery. A tour of the winery with details on the history of the vineyard and the production of their wines is available for €5 per person. You can follow this with a wine tasting in the cellar.

4 wines can be sampled for €5 per person or 8 wines for €10 which is amazing value. All tours and tastings must be booked in advance.

6. Tsangarides Winery (Best for Organic Wines)

Tsangarides describes itself as the next generation of wineries in Cyprus. They aim to blend old-school traditions with modern styles.

The winery is contemporary yet rustic and they work with three organic vineyards which stretch over 100,000 square meters; making them one of the biggest wineries in Cyprus.

If you prefer white wines, I definitely recommend the Chardonnay. For red wine lovers, you must try the Maratheftiko. Both wines are so delicious.

The winery is located in the small town of Lemona and you can take a gorgeous guided tour and tasting. Here, the guys at Tsangarides will take you on a guided tour of the winery to help you understand more about its history and production methods.

This is followed by a tasting of 7 of their best Cyprus wines paired with a cheese and bread sharing board that’s hosted on the beautiful terrace. It’s an excellent day trip to one of my favorite wineries in Cyprus.

7. Vouni Panayia Winery (Best for Amazing Views)

Vouni Panayia winery is one of the most picturesque wineries in Cyprus. It’s located on top of a hill in the small village of Panayia, a 50-minute drive from Paphos.

You can take a tour of the facilities at Vouni which will include the production rooms and a fascinating history of winemaking both at Vouni Panayia and in Cyprus in general.

The highlight of your trip to Vouni is definitely the wine tasting. There’s no charge for the tasting here, and you can try whichever of their delicious Cyprus wines you fancy. You’ll be met with sweeping views over the valley below. It’s a truly breathtaking place to sample some wine.

As a red wine fan, I loved the Barba Yiannis made from the indigenous Maratheftiko grape variety. For white wine, I particularly liked the popular Alina Xynisteri Dry White.

All wines are available to buy at very reasonable prices. There’s also a restaurant here where you can enjoy dinner with a view, and a glass of wine of course (or two!).

If you have a sweet tooth, then be sure to grab a bottle of their wine honey. It’s dark and thick, much more like syrup, but it’s delicious in a salad dressing. It’s also a great memento to take home with you.

8. Vasilikon Winery (Best for Rosé Wine)

Vasilikon winery is one of the biggest wineries in Cyprus. It has 16 hectares of vineyards and produces more than 350,000 bottles each year.

It’s located near the Akamas peninsula, 35 minutes from Paphos, and is the perfect choice for a half-day trip. The higher altitude and proximity to the sea, create distinctive-tasting wines.

The excellent wine-tasting area comes with a fascinating wine mus eum. Here you can walk through the history of winemaking in the region.

Then, settle in for some wine tasting on the sun-soaked terrace and enjoy stunning views over the Akamas sea.

I absolutely recommend their Einalia, a multi-award-winning, dry rosé wine. The Vasilikon Xinisteri Single Vineyard is a delicious white wine.

Vasilikon has its own restaurant serving delicious food all day, including breakfast if you’re an early bird.

9. Ekfraseis Winery (Best for Location)

Ekfraseis Winery is one of the younger wineries in Cyprus, but it’s making a splash in the winemaking scene.

It’s located in Chandria, the second-highest mountain community in Cyprus at around 4,000 feet. The vineyards are at altitudes of 4,200 feet and comprise 60% indigenous grapes and 40% international varieties. It’s one of the highest wineries in Europe and the world.

The main grapes are the indigenous white Xynisteri variety and Mavro and Maratheftiko for the reds.

Ekfraseis offers a huge range of wine tours at their winery and vineyard. From a 1-hour seated wine tasting from €12 per person to the Closer Look package which lasts for 4 hours and includes an in-depth tour of the winery and vineyards as well as an extensive tasting.

Kalamos Winery is 20 minutes from Paphos and is renowned in Cyprus for producing quality, award-winning local wines.

It’s located in the small, traditional, wine-growing village of Amargeti. It has humble roots, having started out as a family-run vine cultivator before growing into the hugely popular, regional winemaker that it is today.

Its award-winning Gerani Maratheftiko, a full-bodied red, is not to be missed. Neither is their exceptional Commanderia, which is a delicious way to finish a tasting.

As well as award-winning wines, Kalamos also distills its own Zivania. This colorless spirit is around 45%ABV and is famous in Cyprus for giving strength and curing ills.

11. Makarounas Boutique Winery (Best for a Family-Run Winery Focusing on Indigenous Grapes)

Makarounas is another of the new breed of wineries in Cyprus that are embracing traditional methods.

Located in Letymbou village, on the west coast of Cyprus, Makarounas is a family-run winery that places its emphasis on indigenous grapes and wines. It’s located in the area of Cyprus known as the vine villages to reflect the strong history of vine growing in the area.

Makarounas is a wonderful place to take a wine tasting. Their veranda at the modern, boutique winery is located amongst olive trees and vines. It’s such a special place to spend an afternoon.

Take a classic or premium tasting, both of which are accompanied by Grandma’s platter, which includes the most delicious olives, village halloumi, and homemade bread.

Vlassides Winery is an exceptional, modern winery in Cyprus with knowledge obtained from around the world incorporated into its innovative approach to winemaking.

It’s an incredible place. From the 21 hectares of traditionally planted vines to the contemporary, architect-designed winery. It really is one of the most beautiful places in Cyprus to take a wine tasting and is one of my favorites.

The winery is open every day except Sundays with guided tours from €12 with 4 vintage wines. Alternatively, the ‘Meet the Winemaker’ tour is €50 per person for 4 hours of touring and tasting. Pairings and tastings can also be booked separately on their website . A wonderful experience.

13. Christoudia Winery (Best for a Wonderful Atmosphere)

From humble beginnings, the exceptional Christoudia winery is an amazing place to visit. In 1992, husband and wife Yiannis and Alexia decided they wanted to follow their passion for winemaking.

Without any previous experience, but a desire to succeed, they produced their first bottle of wine in 1992. By 1995 they were producing 200 liters of wine, by 2011 they had 40,000 liters and hit 100,000 bottles of wine in 2021.

The modern winery has a museum, a tasting area, a production area, and a restaurant. They have a range of wine-tasting options, including the opportunity to try all 9 of their wines for €4 per person. Couple this with brunch or lunch in their restaurant for a brilliant day trip.

14. Ktima Gerolemo (Best for Red Wine)

Ktima Gerolemo is located around 1 km north of the lovely village of Omodos – the most famous wine-making village.

If you have a group of you looking to try a wine-tasting experience, the winery will arrange a visit to the medieval wine press in the center of Omodos. If you’re really into your wine and history, you’ll love this added bonus.

The best day to go here is on Sunday for brunch, which was really yummy and made with local ingredients. It can get quite busy, so book ahead, as it’s an awesome place to spend an afternoon.

The family is super welcoming and friendly, and they offer a really special tour. I tried 6 wines in total, but the Giannoudi Limited Release, a red with dark plum flavors with a hint of cedar oak, is a must-try. It’s one of my favorite wines ever.

15. Ktima Vassiliades (Best for High-end Wine Tasting)

For a luxury experience, Ktima Vassiliades is the place to go. Not only is it the most elegant winery in Cyprus with the most incredible landscape and wine, but it also has a pool which you can use for €25 per person, and a fine dining restaurant on site which is 100% worth a visit. It’s perfect for a romantic date or a special occasion.

The staff that works here not only really know their stuff, but they’re so friendly and lead the tours with a fabulous sense of humor. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know a lot about wine, you’ll be put at ease here.

The highlight was being taught how to properly taste Zivania. That spirit will knock your socks off. My personal favorite wines were the Geroklima Maratheftiko (I love an oaky red) and the Playia White blend, which is fruity and summery.

The history of wine-making in Cyprus is one of the oldest in the world, stretching back nearly 6,000 years .

Cyprus rose to fame in the wine world when the Crusaders visited in the 12th century en route to the Holy Land. They helped develop the commercial production of Cyprus wines and one, in particular, Commandaria.

Commandaria is credited as being the oldest named wine in the world still in production today. Many of the wineries in Cyprus still produce this delicious dessert wine, and it’s a must-try on any tasting tour.

The spectacular Troodos Mountains make for an ideal place to grow high-quality, unique grape varieties. They also provide one of the highest wine-growing regions in Europe.

Coupled with the rich, limestone soil, the Mediterranean summers, the mild winters, and the gentle Cypriot breeze keeping the frost at bay, you find yourself in the perfect wine-growing country.

Must-Try Wines in Cyprus

The long history of wine-growing in Cyprus coupled with the enthusiasm and dedication of its modern wine-makers means a number of indigenous grape varieties are making a comeback in the wine world.

This makes for some excellent and varied wines to be tried when visiting Cyprus. Here are some of the best Cyprus wines, in my opinion.

Xynisteri

This indigenous white grape variety is hugely popular in Cyprus. On its own, it’s used to make deliciously light and refreshing white wines.

These whites are perfect for the hot summers in Cyprus and are refreshing on any wine-tasting tour. Try the award-winning Xynisteri at Fikardos Winery, which is one of my favorites.

Mavro

Mavro is the most popular and most cultivated grape in Cyprus and produces a medium-bodied summer red. Perfect for Cypriot summers.

I particularly enjoy the Vassiliades Ekfraseis Summer Red which is really fruity and can even be served from the fridge, which is no small detail when summer days can hit 40 degrees Celsius.

Maratheftiko

The Maratheftiko grape variety is one of the previously long-lost grapes that has been reintroduced in the past 25 years thanks to the dedication and knowledge of the local winemakers.

It makes for a much heavier red and is often combined with Mavro above to add color and depth. It only accounts for around 5% of the grapes cultivated but is rapidly growing in popularity due to its rich flavors.

Commandaria

Did I mention that Commandaria is the oldest named wine still in production?

With such a famous history, no trip to the wineries of Cyprus would be complete without trying this celebrated Cypriot wine. Its name comes from the time of the Crusades and as an Appellation of Origin wine, only 14 villages in Cyprus are permitted to market this unique wine.

Commandaria is made from a combination of Xynisteri and Mavro grapes. It’s a sweet, fortified wine that is an ideal apéritif or dessert wine.
