Australia Leeds Event Aims to Attract Yorkshire's Young Pros

Australia Leeds event: For many years, countless Brits have journeyed to Australia seeking warmer weather and a more relaxed lifestyle. But how does Western Australia stack up against West Yorkshire, and can the East Coast genuinely rival the East Riding? A new marketing initiative aimed at encouraging migration to Australia’s Northern Territory is zeroing in on Yorkshire's youth. We explore insights from those who’ve made the leap as well as those contemplating the move. It’s a midweek evening, and numerous young professionals in Leeds have wrapped up their 9-to-5 workdays. Instead of heading to the bustling city centre's beer gardens to enjoy the spring warmth, a group has gathered for an information evening aimed at showing them how to propel their careers in Australia’s Outback. Among the attendees is 24-year-old Chloe Rhodes, who works in medical sales. "This has been in my mind since I was quite young," she shares regarding her aspirations to relocate Down Under. "I’m content here, but I yearn for more. I admire the slower lifestyle - having grown up near the beach, I long to be by the water again." Chloe mentions that her ability to secure employment in Australia hinges on obtaining work authorization, as her current role isn’t included on the “skilled list” of occupations. However, she remains optimistic. "I work for a global company, so I’ve requested a transfer. It’s a significant request, but it’s in progress." For others, like Caitlin Murphy, the allure of living in Australia encompasses more than just escaping a chilly winter morning. Having spent two years previously in Western Australia, she feels now is the right time to return with her partner. "We’ve considered the less-explored areas, and the Northern Territory is currently on our radar," she explains. The 26-year-old is drawn to the “chilled and laid-back” lifestyle. Caitlin, originally from Scotland, acknowledges that finding work could be challenging and is hopeful her partner’s position in IT will secure them a permanent visa. "My background is in law, and the transition will be difficult. It might be a struggle to re-establish my career there." According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 39,580 individuals from the UK, Channel Islands, and Isle of Man arrived in Australia in 2024 - the highest number in a decade. The country also welcomed 10,661 migrants from Ireland. This growing trend appears to remain steady, as noted by Geoff Totham, a workforce development officer in the Northern Territory government. He states they previously visited Leeds in 2024 but have seen heightened interest this year. Similar recruitment events have also occurred in Liverpool, Belfast, and Cork. "Most attendees know little about our region of Australia," Geoff admits. Unlike more populous areas, he mentions that the Northern Territory provides skilled employment opportunities for migrant workers. Their outreach is crucial because the sparsely populated Northern Territory, celebrated for its wildlife and diverse landscapes, is on the lookout for 30,000 additional workers over the next five years. "By boosting our marketing efforts in this area, we hope to attract more people to recognize the job potential here, ultimately aiding in workforce solutions," Geoff remarks as he prepares to pitch to attendees. Information sessions popped up in late April in cities such as Belfast, Cork, Liverpool, and Leeds, focusing on skilled workers needed in various sectors including construction, healthcare, education, hospitality, business, and technology. While some are still weighing their options, others have already taken the plunge and settled in some of Australia’s most desirable locations. Ben Cartwright made the move from Leeds to Sydney about 18 months ago. "I always believed I was too young and lacked the finances, but it’s definitely doable," he says. However, upon arrival, Ben found life in Australia more challenging than he anticipated. "I was somewhat naïve about job prospects," he reveals. "Having worked in media and communications in the UK, I thought securing a job would be relatively straightforward, but that was not the case." Ben initially entered Australia on a working holiday visa, which restricted him to working for a maximum of six months with one employer. "It’s essential to keep your expectations in check," he cautions. Although he spent time doing various odd jobs, he eventually landed a position as a magazine editor. "Now, my income is significantly higher than it was in the UK—probably more than double for a comparable role." Adam Laver, 27, transitioned from his role in Bradford to relocate to Adelaide at the end of the previous year. "I absolutely enjoy the city and everything it offers," he states six months after leaving his BBC journalist position in Yorkshire. "I live in a suburb just minutes from the beach, which is something I never thought possible for me." Despite his excitement, Adam admits things haven’t unfolded as smoothly as he had hoped. "The toughest part has been finding work outside the hospitality sector," he confesses. "In Adelaide, many coastal areas quiet down as temperatures drop, and job availability dwindles." Due to the challenges in securing employment, he plans to move to Vietnam next month to teach English. "If I were to do it again, I would ensure I saved enough to buy a car, expanding my job opportunities," he concludes.
