Care leavers jobs in the West Midlands have received a significant boost as Greene King, Severn Trent, and other top businesses in the UK collaborate with both central and local governments. This initiative aims to help care leavers, ex-offenders, and young individuals facing mental health challenges secure quality employment opportunities in the region. The partnership’s goal is to create job openings for 500 additional individuals from these backgrounds, representing a 20% increase. Successful initiatives developed by this collaboration are set to make a national impact, assisting thousands annually. The Economic Inactivity Partnership consists of 12 prominent businesses operating in the West Midlands, alongside five government departments and the West Midlands Combined Authority. Supported by the purpose-driven charity ReGenerate, this initiative leverages the power of business to assist those who often struggle to find employment. This includes care leavers, ex-offenders, and young people dealing with mental health issues, often referred to as “hidden talent.” Such individuals are frequently recognized as highly capable and loyal employees. The Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister, Darren Jones, announced this partnership at the Severn Trent Academy in Coventry. During the event, he met care leavers employed at Severn Trent, a company that offers work experience placements to ease the transition from the care system into the workplace. He also interacted with young apprentices at the Academy, who are honing their skills and developing training at the start of their career paths. Notably, the event drew representatives from some of the UK's largest employers, collectively responsible for employing 1% of the UK workforce, including Amazon, John Lewis Partnership, Severn Trent, Kier Construction, and Greggs. The pilots initiated under this partnership aim to identify effective strategies within the West Midlands and develop solutions that can be expanded nationwide. Key components include: - An AI-driven tool designed to compile insights and best practices from partner businesses like Timpson and Cook Foods. This tool will help employers understand the benefits of hiring hidden talent, providing customized answers and directing them to relevant information and support. - A collaborative talent pool being established by West Midlands Jobcentre Plus, Severn Trent, and Amazon. This pool will allow hidden talent to be swiftly transitioned from one placement to a suitable job at another employer. - Following the success of the Sector-based Work Academy Programme (SWAPs) in Job Centres, the government will collaborate with the partnership to pilot SWAPs in a closed prison in the West Midlands. Expanding its scope, trials will also be conducted in an open prison outside the region. During his visit, the Chief Secretary met with several employees who joined through Severn Trent’s employment pathway for care leavers. Severn Trent stands out as one of the key regional businesses involved in this initiative alongside Birmingham Airport. This partnership builds on the establishment of the Office for Impact Economy last year, which connects the government with purpose-driven businesses, impact investors, and philanthropists. This office, located in the Cabinet Office, acts as a crucial interface for the impact economy, enhancing collaborations to address significant social, environmental, and economic challenges across the UK. Last week, Severn Trent became the latest supporter of the Government's Youth Guarantee, aiming to provide every young person the opportunity to earn or learn. Other notable supporters include the Premier League, Channel 4, and Pinewood Studios. Severn Trent is committed to creating 400 job opportunities for young individuals throughout the Midlands.
