UK Satellite Protection Upgraded with New Space System

UK satellite protection is set to improve significantly with the launch of a new system designed to safeguard British military operations, essential emergency services, and businesses from potential threats in space. This advanced software, known as Borealis, has begun operations six months ahead of its planned rollout, enhancing the UK's capability to monitor and track space objects. Borealis focuses on identifying debris and adversarial satellites that pose risks to UK satellites, equipping the military with crucial data for the defense of space systems and related assets. This innovative space system in the UK swiftly integrates data from various sources to offer the National Space Operations Centre a clearer and more timely understanding of the space environment, thereby enabling effective threat monitoring. In tandem with Borealis, the UK has unveiled images from its Noctis-1 military telescope, which was previously named Nyx-Alpha. This telescope plays a vital role in observing objects in Earth's orbit, offering positional information on UK satellites to avert potential collisions and secure essential space assets. Luke Pollard MP, Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, remarked, "Space has become a contested realm. Shielding our satellites from adversaries is crucial for maintaining our economy and safeguarding public safety. Enhanced defense spending is directed towards developing our capabilities across various domains, including UK space-based operations." The imagery captured by Noctis-1 reveals a spectrum of objects in orbit, including the International Space Station, the UK’s SKYNET military communications satellites, and various satellites from other nations. This data is utilized to augment the Borealis system, further promoting the UK's space awareness. Borealis is being implemented under a £65 million, five-year agreement with CGI UK, which is expected to support 100 skilled positions in locations such as Leatherhead, Reading, and Bristol. This investment in UK space capabilities is part of the largest sustained increase in defense spending since the Cold War, aiming for a rise to 2.6% of GDP by 2027. Given that nearly 20% of the UK’s GDP is dependent on satellites, Borealis significantly boosts the nation’s capacity to monitor and protect the critical national space assets that are fundamental for national security, contemporary military operations, global navigation, digital payment systems, and weather forecasting. Space Minister Liz Lloyd stated, "Borealis marks a major advancement in the UK’s ability to monitor, safeguard, and defend essential space capabilities. This joint investment by the UK Space Agency and Space Command, bolstered by British expertise and job creation, ensures the UK remains at the forefront of space environment awareness for future generations." Major General Paul Tedman, Commander of UK Space Command, added, "Safeguarding the invisible frontline in space necessitates understanding orbital activities and making rapid decisions. The introduction of Noctis-1, followed by Noctis-2, will provide us with the independent intelligence required to enhance our awareness in the space domain. Efficient data processing is crucial in space operations; Borealis employs advanced software to analyze vast data and help my operators in the National Space Operations Centre make informed choices. Together, they represent a substantial improvement in the UK's space capability." Borealis is a distinctive UK-developed system crucial for military operations globally. It will be stationed at the National Space Operations Centre, overseeing the UK’s space surveillance and protection efforts. The Borealis software will facilitate monitoring of environmental variables and space objects, including debris and active satellites. It will compile comprehensive data pertinent to UK satellites for improved protection and deliver timely updates to government and military officials, enhancing decision-making capabilities for terrestrial military operations.
