New Space System Boosts UK Satellite Protection Efforts

UK satellite protection is set to enhance significantly through a groundbreaking new system designed to safeguard UK satellites and the essential services they provide from threats in space. This innovative software, named Borealis, has become operational six months ahead of schedule, improving the UK's ability to identify and track objects in space effectively. Borealis monitors both debris and adversarial satellites that might jeopardize UK satellites, delivering vital intelligence to military forces for the defense of space systems and assets. The software efficiently aggregates, fuses, and analyzes data from various sources, enabling the National Space Operations Centre (NSOC) to acquire a more precise and rapid understanding of space, thus improving the monitoring of potential threats. This development coincides with the UK unveiling images captured by Britain's Noctis-1 military telescope (previously named Nyx-Alpha). This telescope tracks objects in Earth's orbit, offering position data on UK satellites, which aids in collision avoidance and protects vital space infrastructure. Luke Pollard MP, Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, stated: "Space is now a contested domain. Protecting our satellites from adversarial threats ensures our economy remains robust and keeps everyone safe. As we increase defense spending, we are committing to new defensive capabilities across all domains, including UK space technology." Images from Noctis-1 reveal various objects in orbit, including the International Space Station, the UK's SKYNET military communication satellites, and other satellites from around the globe. Data from Noctis-1 is integrated into the Borealis system, enhancing the UK's space awareness capabilities. The deployment of this software is part of a £65 million, five-year agreement with CGI UK, generating 100 specialized jobs across Leatherhead, Reading, and Bristol.
