Train Overspeeding Incident Shakes Trowell Rail Lines

Train overspeeding incidents can have serious consequences, as evidenced by the recent event at Trowell, Nottinghamshire, on 4 May 2026. At approximately 13:47 on that day, the 12:09 Leeds to Nottingham service, operated by Northern, encountered an overspeeding situation at both Trowell North and South Junctions in Nottinghamshire. As the train approached these junctions, it was directed over five sets of points leading to a diverging route, which had a maximum permissible speed of 30 mph (48 km/h). Yet, the train sped through the first set of points at 70 mph (112 km/h) and maintained a velocity of 45 mph (72 km/h) upon reaching the last set. Notably, the signals indicating the diverging route were functioning correctly. The excessive speed over the junctions resulted in the train swaying sideways, causing passengers to be thrown from their seats and some to fall to the floor, which led to several minor injuries. Fortunately, the train did not derail during this incident. The scope of our investigation will concentrate on unraveling the sequence of events that resulted in the train overspeeding.
