On January 19, a court in Makhachkala, the capital of Russia’s Dagestan region, issued a five-year prison sentence to women’s rights activist and journalist Svetlana Anokhina for allegedly sharing “fake news” about the Russian armed forces. The ruling was delivered in absentia, as Anokhina left Russia in 2021 following a raid on the shelter operated by her organization, Marem, by Chechen and Dagestani police. The case stems from two Instagram posts in 2022 reporting Russian war crimes shortly after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
