Escalating violence and social unrest across South Asia reveal a dangerous political pattern where leaders exploit identity, religion, and nationalism to distract from governance failures. Recent incidents across Nepal, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and the Maldives point to a regional trend in which hate politics replaces accountability, eroding the rule of law and placing minority communities at heightened risk. Human Rights Watch has documented how political leaders across South Asia increasingly rely on fear and scapegoating to consolidate power, rather than addressing economic instability, corruption, and institutional decay. Violence Rooted In Political Instrumentalization Of Identity Hate-driven violence has surfaced in multiple forms. In Bangladesh, a Hindu man was killed by a mob following blasphemy allegations later found to be unfounded. Such accusations, often amplified by political rhetoric, have repeatedly triggered mob violence with little accountability. In Nepal, a Dalit man died after being beaten over a false theft accusation, highlighting entrenched caste discrimination and weak enforcement of legal protections. India has witnessed similar patterns. An official affiliated with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party disrupted a Christmas lunch for children with disabilities, alleging forced religious conversion without evidence and verbally abusing a blind woman. Such acts reinforce a broader climate where minorities are portrayed as threats, legitimising harassment and violence. International human rights law, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, obliges states to protect individuals from discrimination and violence based on religion, caste, or belief. Failures to investigate and prosecute such abuses contribute to impunity and normalise collective punishment. Cross-Border Hatred And Regional Destabilisation Political manipulation of hate has extended beyond domestic borders. Tensions between India and Bangladesh intensified as public outrage over attacks on minorities spilt into diplomatic and cultural spaces, including sports. Decisions to exclude individuals based solely on nationality reflect how identity-based politics corrodes regional cooperation. Relations between India and Pakistan have similarly deteriorated. Armed conflict in April followed attacks in Jammu and Kashmir that killed Hindu tourists. Sri Lanka’s experience further illustrates the pattern. Despite leadership change following protests in 2022, the United Nations human rights office reports continued use of counterterrorism laws disproportionately affecting Tamil and Muslim minorities, alongside persistent allegations of torture. India’s Entrenchment Of Majoritarian Politics India’s ruling party continues to deploy Hindu nationalist rhetoric to mobilise electoral support after an extended time in power. Hate speech during campaigns frequently goes unchecked, while violence against Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, and Dalits escalates. Such practices violate core principles of equality before the law and judicial independence, pillars recognised in international human rights standards and India’s own constitutional framework. Long-Term Risks Of Governing Through Hate Sustained reliance on divisive politics weakens institutions, fuels cycles of retaliation, and increases the likelihood of mass unrest. South Asia’s recent history demonstrates that leaders who prioritise hatred over governance eventually face public backlash, often amid instability and violence. Durable stability depends on policies that promote equality, employment, healthcare access, and credible justice systems. Respect for minority rights and independent institutions remains essential not only for human dignity but also for long-term political legitimacy.
