African Union action in South Sudan has become increasingly urgent as the humanitarian and human rights situation continues to deteriorate. Reports from early 2025 highlight growing civilian suffering, forced recruitment, arbitrary arrests, and repeated attacks on civilian infrastructure. The AU Peace and Security Council’s ambassadorial-level meeting on January 19 presents a critical opportunity to address these ongoing abuses and reinforce commitments under the 2018 peace agreement.
