Online Safety Minister Australia, Kanishka Narayan, is urging both parents and children to share their insights as the important consultation on children's online safety approaches its conclusion in just two days. This initiative aims to guide the UK’s future actions in safeguarding youngsters on the internet. As part of this effort, Minister Narayan is preparing for a trip to Australia this week. This visit signifies the next phase of the government's nationwide listening exercise, extending discussions globally to gain insights into how other nations are tackling similar challenges regarding online safety. While in Australia, the Minister plans to engage with key figures, including Australia’s E-Safety Commissioner, to evaluate the practical implications of their pioneering social media age restrictions. He aims to gather insights into the implementation and regulation processes, as well as the lessons learned since these restrictions were put in place. Furthermore, the Minister will interact directly with young Australians, seeking to understand the impact of these changes on their daily lives. This trip follows a week during which the Minister toured the UK, gathering perspectives from families, educators, and youth about social media and other online safety initiatives currently being considered. Coinciding with his visit, Tech Secretary Liz Kendall will be in Paris at the G7, meeting with international counterparts to discuss technology policies, including fostering a safer online environment for youth. Online Safety Minister Kanishka Narayan stated, "As we outline our next steps toward securing a safer online environment for children, it’s vital we leverage the best available evidence. Our aim is to ensure our actions are well-informed. This is why I am visiting Australia to study their unique approach to social media age restrictions. The lessons learned will inform our future initiatives to support healthier and more enriching experiences for children and young people across the UK." The Minister's journey to Australia coincides with the announcement of an academic panel composed of renowned experts tasked with appraising the evidence gathered from the consultation responses. This panel will assist the government in grasping both the positives and negatives of social media use among young individuals, while also identifying potential interventions to promote happier and healthier online experiences. Chaired by Professor Russell Viner, the panel includes leading figures in child development, technology, and online safety, such as Professor Amy Orben, who is conducting a significant scientific trial in Bradford focused on the effects of social media reduction among adolescents. The current consultation has already garnered over 70,000 responses, marking it as one of the most substantial feedback efforts under this administration. Recently, the Prime Minister and Tech Secretary convened a forum for parents, youth, and civil society groups at Downing Street to discuss necessary changes for enhanced online safety for children.
