Defence medical cooperation between the UK and Ukraine has been significantly enhanced with the visit of Major General Anatolii Kazmirchuk, the Surgeon General of the Medical Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This visit was key in fortifying medical collaboration and support. During his time in the UK, Major General Kazmirchuk engaged with top Defence clinical leaders, including Chief of Defence Medical Air Marshal Clare Walton and UK Surgeon General Major General Phil Carter. He had the opportunity to connect with Defence Medical staff and observe first-hand how the UK's medical capabilities continue to benefit the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Conversations revolved around the medical hurdles posed by drone warfare, specifically regarding evacuation protocols and the movement of medical personnel. Important lessons were discussed that the UK and NATO allies can learn from Ukraine's experiences in these areas. Major General Anatolii Kazmirchuk expressed gratitude, stating: "The Medical Forces Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine values the professional collaboration with UK Defence Medical. This cooperation aims to enhance the medical services provided to our defenders. Thanks to the fruitful exchange of knowledge and experience, many injured Ukrainian service members are either returning to duty or successfully transitioning back into civilian life." The Ukrainian Surgeon General also agreed to bolster research and knowledge-sharing initiatives with the Institute of Naval Medicine in Gosport. His visit included a tour of the medical facilities aboard the Royal Navy’s Type 45 destroyer, HMS Dauntless. The agenda also featured a briefing by the UK Defence Medical innovation team about pioneering technologies in front-line medicine. He visited the Royal London Hospital, one of the UK's top trauma centers, where he learned how early blood transfusions have significantly increased survival rates for critically injured patients. At Defence Medical Command in Lichfield, Major General Kazmirchuk toured the Defence Medical Academy. Ukrainian medical personnel have benefited from training at this facility, sparking discussions about multinational collaboration. This includes the UK's prominent role in NATO’s Project Renovator, aimed at enhancing Ukraine’s rehabilitation capabilities. Moreover, he agreed to implement a research exchange program that pairs UK Defence Clinical Advisors with their Ukrainian counterparts to promote collaboration and shared learning. Air Marshal Clare Walton, Chief of Defence Medical, stated: "I take great pride in how Defence Medical supports Ukraine by offering critical medical assistance to its Armed Forces. During this visit, we reaffirmed our commitment to safeguarding their health as they resist Russia's unjust invasion. Meeting Major General Anatolii Kazmirchuk again was truly humbling, and discussing the medical challenges faced by him and his colleagues in Ukraine was enlightening. Our partnership holds immense value, and we are grateful for the insights we've gained from it. The entire UK Defence Medical Services stands united with him and Ukraine." Additionally, UK Surgeon General Major General Phil Carter reflected: "This visit underscores the robust partnership between UK Defence Medical and our Ukrainian counterparts. By sharing expertise, engaging in joint training, and learning from one another, we actively bolster support for Ukraine while enhancing our own military medical capabilities. We remain dedicated to assisting Ukraine through ongoing collaboration, innovation, and education, ensuring that their medical personnel are well-prepared to face the challenges ahead." This visit builds on the agreement established last year between the Defence Medical Academy (DMA) and the Ukrainian Military Medical Academy (UMMA), facilitating military medical education, research, and cooperative training opportunities.
