£340 Million Pharmacy Boost Accelerates High Street Care

Pharmacy boost is on the horizon for patients throughout England, as a new £340 million government-funded initiative will enhance services, treatments, and medicine access at local pharmacies. With the introduction of a new contractual framework, pharmacists with independent prescribing qualifications will be empowered to evaluate patients and prescribe medications directly. This builds on the achievements of the Pharmacy First service, which offers immediate care for common ailments and expands patient access to a broader array of medicines. Set to commence in autumn 2026, these changes are designed to decrease the number of referrals back to general practitioners (GPs), thereby increasing efficiency and improving patient experiences and outcomes. In the past year alone, over 3.3 million Pharmacy First consultations were conducted from March 2025 to February 2026, marking a 43% increase compared to the previous year. Notably, nearly 9 in 10 (86%) of participants reported a positive experience utilizing the service for support with one of the seven common conditions covered. The £340 million funding initiative and the launch of independent prescribing have been established in collaboration with Community Pharmacy England. This announcement follows a record investment over the past two years, alongside several measures aimed at providing enhanced services to patients. These measures include: - Free access to the morning-after pill at pharmacies on the NHS for the first time, overcoming disparities in women's access to medications. - Adding mental health resources by offering support at pharmacies for patients prescribed antidepressants, enhancing community mental health support. - Streamlining access to consultations by cutting red tape, allowing more pharmacy team members to provide a wider range of services like medicines advice, minor condition consultations, and blood pressure monitoring. - Increasing financial incentives for pharmacists to identify patients with undiagnosed hypertension. - Enhancing funding for medicine supplies to improve patient access to prescribed medications. We support ongoing efforts to address the recognized pharmacy funding gap. Currently, under the Pharmacy First initiative, patients can receive advice, over-the-counter treatments, and prescription-only medications under patient group directives. This encompasses a variety of minor health issues affecting the ears, nose, throat, eyes, and skin, among other conditions. It ensures prompt care for patients right in their neighborhood, simultaneously easing GP workloads.
