Newquay is famed for its many excellent beaches and attracts families, holiday makers, and surfers to its miles of golden sand every year. But what are the best beaches in Newquay?

In this article, you’ll discover the best Newquay beaches for surfing and swimming, beaches to bring your dog along with you, and more.

I’ve been visiting this stretch of the north Cornish coastline since childhood and have spent a lot of time surfing and swimming at the various beaches around Newquay. Fistral Beach Fistral beach is Newquay’s most famous stretch of sand and the best beach in Newquay for surfing thanks to its gnarly breaks and proximity to the town’s lively nightlife. The beach plays host to the UK’s top surf competitions such as Boardmasters and others.

The beach stretches for just under a mile between two headlands and is backed by cliffs and dunes, with a good selection of cafes, restaurants, surf rental places, and shops.

This is one of my favorite surfing spots in Cornwall and certainly one of the best beaches in Newquay.

El Huichol Mexican Streetfood: If you’re looking for something a little different head to El Huichol for tacos, nachos, and burritos you can take away and enjoy on the beach. 3. Beacon Cove This secluded little beach is situated between Fistral beach and Harbour beach a short walk from central Newquay.

Due to its secluded location, this is one of the quieter Newquay beaches and a great place to escape the summer crowds.

As it’s a working harbor it’s not safe for swimming, but it’s perfect for a walk or for eating fish and chips on the harbor wall.

Cozy Annex: This stylish self-contained one-bedroom annex is located a few steps from the harbor with all the amenities of the town close by.

Harbour Cottage: This original fisherman’s cottage has two bedrooms and has been renovated with a modern twist. Restaurants Near Harbour Beach Here are some dining options around the harbor.

The Harbour Fish and Grill: The food is as good as the views on offer from this harborside eatery . The seven-course taster menu is a must.

The Red Lion: The Red Lion is one of my go-to places in Newquay for a pint and a bite to eat. Traditional pub grub and local seafood are specialties.

Graze Tapas Wine Bar: Tapas is always best enjoyed close to the sea, and Graze is one of the best spots for some Spanish food and crisp wines beside the harbor. 5. Towan Beach Towan beach is the closest large stretch of golden sand to the town center (just a few steps) and is one of the best beaches in Newquay for families and another of the year-round dog-friendly beaches.

It’s one of my favorite places in Newquay to soak up the holiday atmosphere and I have many happy memories from this place.

Flat in Newquay: This stylish one-bedroom apartment with a balcony is directly opposite Towan beach and is the perfect place for couples who want the convenience of everything on their doorstep. Restaurants Near Towan Beach Towan is so close to the center of Newquay that you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to restaurants. Here are three of the best.

The Coconut Chy: This quirky “Caribbean” shack on the beach is the perfect place to sip a pina colada and enjoy tasty snacks such as jerk chicken, curries, and more.

Walkabout Newquay: Cornwall has much in common with Australia thanks to its surf, sea, and sand, and is now also home to this ubiquitous Aussie chain serving cheap and hearty meals by the beach.

Jon Bouys: No trip to the British seaside is complete without a fish and chip supper, and Jon Bouys ‘ is just the plaice to enjoy this classic dish.

6. Great Western Beach Awarded the 2022 Seaside Award, Great Western is another of the best public beaches in Newquay and is a short walk from the town center. The beach is located between Towan and Tolcarne beaches and at low tide all three combine into a large stretch of sand (there is also a path for high tide).

Sun Decked Duplex: A luxurious one-bedroom duplex with a balcony that sleeps three people and is just a few minute’s walk from the beach. Restaurants Near Great Western Beach Great Western beach is as close to central Newquay as Tolcarne and Towan so there’s no end to the dining options on offer. Here are a couple of great choices:

Great Western Surf Cafe: This excellent beachside cafe serves a selection of lunchtime snacks and interesting evening meals from burgers to Asian and Mexican.

Butchers Bistro: A charming little bistro across the road from Great Western beach specializing in steaks from Cornish cattle and locally caught seafood. 7. Watergate Bay Beach This beautiful stretch of coastline and sandy beach three miles up the coast from Newquay is an excellent spot for walking.

It’s also a gnarly place for experienced surfers to catch the massive waves that come sweeping in from the north Atlantic.

One of the best beaches close to Newquay and definitely worth the 15-minute drive (or 45-minute walk) from the center of town.

The Waves: This modern one-bedroom apartment is close to the beach, sleeps up to four people, and is the perfect place for small families to stay.

The Hayloft: This gorgeous two-bedroom loft conversion is in an old stone barn with stunning countryside views. Restaurants Near Watergate Bay Beach Here are a few excellent dining options around Watergate Bay:

Emily Scott Food: This upmarket seafood restaurant is next to the beach and is the perfect place for a romantic evening in wonderful surroundings.

The Beach Hut: This beachside restaurant is a great option at any time of the day. I love the exciting menu of classic and contemporary dishes (my favorite is the Cornish crab bisque).

Wax Watergate Bay: This bar and kitchen overlooks Watergate Bay and serves a wide selection of dishes from pizzas and burgers to fish and chips.

8. Lusty Glaze Beach Lusty Glaze is a small secluded cove and one of the few private beaches in Newquay, although it’s usually open to the public and is free to visit. It won beach of the year in 2017 and is the perfect location for beach weddings and other special ceremonies.

Porth Beach Porth beach is one of the best beaches in Newquay for swimming as surfing is banned during the summer; meaning it’s also the perfect place for families to enjoy the beach.

With miles of golden sand to run about and build sand castles on, this is definitely a great place to bring the kids.

10. Whipsiderry Beach This hidden gem was voted one of the 20 best beaches in Europe by the Sunday Times and is the perfect place to relax away from the crowds of the town beaches. The beach is sheltered by cliffs on either side so the water is usually calm and it’s a great spot for sunbathing.

Crantock Beach Beautiful Crantock beach is overseen by the National Trust and is one of the best beaches near Newquay for walking and getting out into Cornwall’s stunning nature.

The beach is backed by sweeping sand dunes and is a haven for wildlife. If you’re lucky you may even spot a dolphin or two.

12. Mawgan Porth Beach Another of the closest beaches to Newquay Airport so, if you really can’t wait to hit the water this, along with gorgeous Watergate Bay, is the place to go. This is another dog-friendly beach in Newquay as four-legged friends are allowed all year round.
