‎Communities Secretary Steve Reed has reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to asylum system reforms, despite facing significant opposition from members of the Labour Party. In tandem, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood unveiled a series of policy adjustments designed to overhaul the current approach to asylum, including measures that would require refugees to wait up to 20 years before applying for permanent residency. The reforms also propose stronger deportation measures for families whose asylum claims have been rejected. These asylum system reforms have sparked considerable debate, particularly over the potential deportation of children, with critics arguing that such measures contradict British values and humanitarian principles.
