Government Launches 300,000 New Work Experience Placements Nationwide

Work experience placements are set to provide crucial support for young people across the nation, with the introduction of 300,000 new opportunities in sectors such as construction, health and social care, and hospitality. These placements are part of a £2.5 billion youth employment support initiative aiming to help young individuals gain practical experience, develop essential skills, and secure stable employment. In conjunction with the Government's acceleration of its Youth Guarantee, this effort strives to ensure every young person has the opportunity to either earn or learn, addressing the alarming rise in the number of individuals not engaged in education, employment, or training (NEET), which currently exceeds one million. Work experience is widely acknowledged as a vital stepping stone, equipping young people with the confidence and skills necessary for success. An interim report by Alan Milburn, published yesterday (28 May), highlighted that the initial rung of the career ladder has become increasingly narrow. Commissioned by the Government to investigate youth unemployment causes, the report cautioned that without providing genuine work experience opportunities, Britain may face the risk of a lost generation. Pat McFadden, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, stated: "The data is clear; meaningful work experience significantly boosts the chances of young people establishing lasting careers. That's why we are launching 300,000 new placements, supported by some of the UK's largest employers, to equip young individuals with the skills, confidence, and networks essential for their advancement. This generation deserves every chance to thrive, and this Government is committed to making that happen." The new work experience placements will encompass both direct experience and Sector-based Work Academy Programmes (SWAPs), reaching out to young people from all corners of the country. SWAPs are government-funded, short-term programs designed for jobseekers claiming unemployment benefits, which offer training, practical workplace experience, and guaranteed job interviews. Recent analyses indicate that approximately 40% of SWAP participants secure sustained employment within six months, earning an average of £1,400 per month, showcasing the program's effective, long-term impact on young individuals. Major organizations like Manchester Airport Group, JD, and Gatwick Airport are already endorsing SWAPs, with the construction sector leading this initiative. Pierre-Hugues Schmit, Chief Executive of London Gatwick, remarked: "We are thrilled to host the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions here at London Gatwick. As a key employer and economic force in the South-East, we understand the importance of creating opportunities for young people. We take pride in our initiatives like our established apprenticeship program, internship availability, community outreach, and the London Gatwick Aviation Academy. Since February 2026, this SWAP program, executed in partnership with the DWP and Jobcentre Plus, has allowed 81 participants to earn a Level 1 NCFE qualification in ‘Introduction to Aviation,’ with more than half finding employment at the airport. We are dedicated to crafting clear pathways into rewarding, high-skill careers." Construction SWAPs reached unprecedented levels during 2025/26, with nearly 17,000 participants, contributing to the skilled workforce needed to meet Britain's housing and infrastructure objectives. The Youth Guarantee package is set to offer a spectrum of chances for young people, including a £3,000 Youth Jobs Grant and an additional 50,000 youth apprenticeships. This initiative supports the Government's mission to align securing good employment for Britain's youth with broader economic growth strategies. Additionally, nearly 100,000 SWAPs were executed in 2025/26, marking an increase of almost 15,000 from the previous year, with a record 25,000 young individuals aged 16 to 24 participating in a SWAP, up from 21,000 the prior year.
