The Marshall Scholarship programme is set to receive a considerable boost from the UK Government, which will increase funding to £5 million annually. Additionally, 10 new scholarships will be introduced, specifically targeting disciplines in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Over the next three years, the Marshall Scholarship programme will see an uplift of £0.9 million thanks to the UK Government’s Spending Review settlement. This funding increase elevates the total FCDO Grant-in-Aid support for the Marshall Scholarship to £5 million each year. The new funding is aimed at expanding the scholarship's reach, with special attention on STEM fields. Among the new opportunities, 10 additional scholarships will be allocated through the established Marshall Scholarship selection process, five of which are expected to be hosted by institutions located in Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. These awards will not be part of a separate competition but will blend into the existing selection cycle, aiming to increase the total annual number of scholars to 50. This initiative highlights the increasing significance of the Marshall Scholarship in enhancing UK-US relationships, a point emphasized by His Majesty The King during his recent address to the United States Congress. His Majesty remarked: "The Marshall Scholarship, named after the distinguished General George Marshall, and the Association which I take great pride in patroning, symbolize the enduring connection between our two nations. Since its inception, over 2,300 scholarships have been granted, allowing Americans from a multitude of backgrounds to study at premier universities in the United Kingdom." This announcement is also in line with the goals outlined in the UK-US A250 partnership, showcasing the ongoing importance of education and interpersonal connections in the bilateral relationship.
