Detainee Death Armenia raises significant concerns regarding how authorities handle individuals experiencing psychosocial distress. Armen Hovhannisyan’s tragic suicide on May 16 occurred mere hours after Armenian police transferred him to a psychiatric facility. His detention followed allegations of tearing down an election campaign poster, leading to criminal proceedings for purportedly obstructing campaign activities. Official reports indicate that while in police custody, Hovhannisyan exhibited what was described as ‘mentally unbalanced behavior,’ prompting officers to call for an ambulance. He was then taken to a psychiatric institution in Yerevan, where authorities reported his death by suicide later that same day.
