French Coastguard Saves 100+ Migrants Crossing Channel

Migrants crossing the Channel faced a harrowing ordeal when the French coastguard rescued 106 individuals from a single boat after it malfunctioned during their attempt to cross the English Channel. French authorities, alerted to the stricken vessel on Saturday, promptly transported the migrants aboard a rescue ship to Calais during the early hours of Sunday. The operation began when seven individuals found themselves in peril while boarding the vessel in the Wimereux area, which included a woman who lost consciousness and required helicopter evacuation. On Thursday, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood finalized a three-year agreement with France, designating riot-trained police to patrol northern beaches to prevent migrants from crossing the Channel in small boats. According to the Home Office, this agreement aims to facilitate the removal of hundreds of migrants per year from French beaches, deporting them to their home countries or other EU nations they may have transited through. Enhancements in enforcement actions on beaches will be funded by £501 million, with an additional potential funding of up to £160 million available if new measures prove effective in reducing crossings. As of January 1 to April 22, 2026, 6,077 individuals crossed the English Channel via small boats from France, showcasing a 37% reduction compared to the previous year.
