Key Joint Statement on the Strait of Hormuz Mission

The Strait of Hormuz mission was reaffirmed during the Leaders’ Level Summit co-chaired by the UK and France on April 17. The UK, France, and their allies are dedicated to leveraging their collective diplomatic, economic, and military resources to ensure free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. This commitment aligns with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and upholds international law principles. On May 12, 2026, the UK and France gathered Defence Ministers and representatives from 38 countries to announce their political backing for a multinational military mission. This mission aims to be independent and purely defensive in nature. In partnership with pertinent nations and the maritime sector, the Strait of Hormuz mission will bolster civilian shipping, instill confidence for commercial shipping operators, and engage in mine clearance activities. It is crucial to note that operations will only begin in favorable conditions and will strictly adhere to international law and national constitutions. This mission is designed to stand apart from other military operations, ensuring open communication and conflict de-escalation with all involved nations and partners. It will supplement the ongoing diplomatic initiatives and de-escalation efforts, which continue to be the main focus while also demonstrating a solid commitment to safeguarding international trade. As preparation for the operations to commence in a permissive environment, the undersigned nations express their political support for the mission, noting that necessary national conditions and parliamentary processes will be observed.
