Her extensive experience includes serving as NATO Ambassador and Permanent Representative from 2017 to 2022. Dame Sarah's career at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCO) spans various critical roles. She was the Director General for Defence and Intelligence between 2014 and 2017, as well as the Director for Defence and International Security from 2011 to 2014. Before these roles, she served as the Director of Strategic Finance from 2009 to 2011. Notably, she was a Weatherhead Fellow at Harvard from 2008 to 2009, and from 2006 to 2008, she held positions as the British High Commissioner to Sierra Leone and HM Ambassador to Liberia. Dame Sarah's international experience also includes a significant role at the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) from 2004 to 2005, where she was the Strategy Coordinator. Prior to this, from 2002 to 2004, she worked within the FCO's United Nations Department and then the Conflict Department. She began her work at the UK Mission to the United Nations in New York as First Secretary from 2000 to 2002. Earlier in her career, she was part of the Strategic Planning Department at the FCO from 1997 to 1999, and served as Second Secretary at the British Embassy in Madrid from 1996 to 1997. Her foundational experience includes working as Third Secretary at the United Kingdom Mission to the UN in Vienna from 1994 to 1995 and within the FCO’s United Nations Department from 1991 to 1993.
