Underwater tech AUKUS is set to revolutionize defense capabilities, as announced by the AUKUS Defence Ministers during their recent meeting in Singapore. This event marked significant advancement in the trilateral security alliance between Australia, the UK, and the US. The collaboration on transformative underwater technology represents the inaugural initiative under Pillar 2 of the AUKUS partnership, with the first operational capabilities anticipated to roll out next year. Together we are announcing groundbreaking underwater capabilities that will keep Britain safe, backing British businesses that are driving growth and standing shoulder to shoulder with our closest allies. This is what modern defense looks like. We’re stepping on the accelerator to develop cutting-edge tech to boost our collective deterrence and support our shared security." The initial capabilities are expected to be operational by 2027 and will facilitate the Royal Navy’s transition into a Hybrid Navy, a more agile and modern force integrating both crewed and uncrewed platforms. Such payloads will empower the Royal Navy to better detect underwater threats against the UK and its allies, resulting in a more formidable and efficient military force. This technology will also bolster the future SSN-AUKUS attack submarine fleet. Additionally, Defence Secretary Healey announced the winners of the 2025 AUKUS Maritime Innovation Challenge, the second phase in the Innovation Challenge Series under Pillar 2. This challenge invited companies to innovate in the command, control, and integration of undersea systems. Notably, three of the four winning firms are UK-based: - Decision Analysis Services Ltd., an SME in Basingstoke - SEA Ltd., a large enterprise in Frome - A-2i, a micro-consultancy in Dorchester, Dorset - MSI Transducers, a large firm located near Boston, USA These winners exemplify the diversity of innovation within the AUKUS partnership, representing a mix of three UK companies and one from the US, including one SME, two large suppliers, and one micro-consultancy. Each will receive a portion of £3 million in funding to further develop and test their technologies. This investment in British firms underscores how defense initiatives, particularly the advancement of underwater technology, are catalyzing economic growth and creating skilled job opportunities across the UK. The UK Government remains dedicated to supporting both SMEs and scalable businesses. Moreover, the AUKUS Defence Ministers announced progress regarding the establishment of Submarine Rotational Force-West, which entails a rotational deployment of UK and US nuclear-powered submarines at HMAS Stirling in Australia. The first deployment of a US nuclear-powered submarine to HMAS Stirling is set for 2027, to be followed by a UK Astute Class submarine, succeeding the successful submarine maintenance period (SMP) earlier this year on a UK Astute Class submarine at the same location. Today’s announcements are part of a series of key milestones achieved by the Government under AUKUS, building on the Geelong Treaty signed in July 2025, which set the groundwork for unprecedented UK-Australian defense collaboration in decades.
