Rise in False Domestic Abuse Claims by Migrants Warns Minister

She highlighted a troubling trend: more migrants are reportedly filing fraudulent allegations of domestic abuse in light of protections meant to assist genuine victims. In her testimony to the home affairs committee, Phillips remarked that she has observed a notable rise in false domestic abuse claims over the past five years. Upon assuming her ministerial role in 2024, she prompted officials to investigate this issue further. Phillips suggested that the Home Office might consider raising the evidential requirements to help eliminate fabricated claims. "Some of the evidential thresholds that have been used in the past - for example, support organizations stating that you are a victim and have used their services - I think that needs to be incredibly tight on those organizations that are trusted [to do that]," she stated. This phenomenon occurs when a woman reports being a victim of domestic abuse, only for a man to subsequently claim he is also a victim. Phillips expressed concern that it sometimes appears as if all perpetrators are connected through a 'massive WhatsApp group' that shares strategies for circumventing the legal system. The UK government has established a program allowing migrants who are domestic abuse victims and hold visas sponsored by their partners to apply for a fast-tracked path to permanent residency, known as indefinite leave to remain. This initiative was created to assist true victims who often find themselves in a difficult dilemma: stay with an abusive partner or leave the country. Recent statistics show that claims made under this scheme have surged by 50% within two years, now exceeding 5,500 annually, as reported by the BBC. "I have seen a growing number of cases that you are referring to and have also raised this issue with the Home Office," Phillips noted in her address to the committee. Despite the rise in false claims, she clarified that she encountered thousands of legitimate cases of domestic abuse. Phillips underlined that while preventing false domestic abuse claims is crucial, it is equally important to ensure genuine victims are not adversely affected.
