Romsey Flood Alleviation Boosted by New Defences

The Romsey flood alleviation scheme has seen two major enhancements by the Environment Agency, significantly lowering flood risks and minimizing disruptions for local residents. To combat flooding, Stockbridge Road has been raised approximately 40 centimeters in partnership with Hampshire County Council. This upgrade, completed late last year, serves as a passive barrier that needs minimal intervention. By elevating the road, floodwater can be contained within the floodplain, eliminating the necessity for temporary barriers or road closures. This enhancement has already demonstrated its effectiveness. During last winter’s high-water levels, the road was previously at risk of overtopping; however, thanks to the improvements, there were no road closures. The £300,000 investment represents a cost-efficient and durable solution for the area. Additionally, the Environment Agency has revamped flood management at the river weed recovery compound, which operates during the summer months to capture weed cuttings. In the past, a gap was left open between the floodwall and flood embankment for machinery access, requiring a temporary barrier during flood events. This process was labor-intensive, needing multiple teams and consistent monitoring. Furthermore, uneven ground made it less effective. Now, this arrangement has been replaced with a permanent demountable defense system. This consists of a 25-meter concrete base with demountable uprights and channels, enabling quick installation of purpose-made aluminum stop logs with fewer staff. This innovation improves reliability and resilience at this crucial site. Artur Podsiadly, project manager at the Environment Agency, stated, "Both of these projects will enhance the Romsey flood alleviation scheme's resilience against future flood events. With these passive and rapid deployment measures, we can use our resources more effectively when water levels rise." John O’Flynn, area manager for the Environment Agency, added, "These enhancements will bolster flood protection for Romsey while minimizing traffic disruptions on Stockbridge Road. By removing the need for temporary barriers, we can respond more swiftly to flood incidents across Hampshire. We apologize for any inconvenience caused during these enhancements."
