Self-Driving Vehicles Near Booking for Taxi and Bus Rides

Self-driving vehicles will soon be available for booking as applications open today (22 May 2026) for operators to deploy these innovative taxi and bus-style services across Great Britain. This groundbreaking pilot program allows firms, including the British self-driving technology leader Wayve, to introduce advanced technology onto UK roads, generating thousands of jobs and unlocking billions for the economy by 2035. These self-driving services promise to enhance travel experiences, fostering greater freedom and independence for older and disabled individuals. Additionally, they will expand transportation options for both work and leisure activities. Self-driving technology is set to revolutionize road travel, especially since human error is responsible for 88% of collisions on UK roads. Safety will be a top priority in this pilot scheme, which aims to collect real-world data on how self-driving vehicles navigate everyday situations, from busy city streets to safely transporting passengers while interacting with traffic. The initiative will undergo rigorous evaluations by the government, including comprehensive safety assessments to safeguard the technology against cyber threats and security vulnerabilities. Roads and Buses Minister Simon Lightwood remarked, "Self-driving vehicles present a transformational opportunity for Britain, facilitating independent travel for people with disabilities and elderly adults while stimulating economic growth and creating highly-skilled jobs nationwide. This pilot scheme brings us closer to that exciting future, allowing passengers to experience self-driving travel with safety as our foremost concern." Local transport authorities, such as Transport for London, will also need to grant approval to ensure these services align with local needs. The government cooperates closely with safety and accessibility experts to develop regulations that will enable the safe introduction of self-driving vehicles to British roads. Insights gained from these pilot programs will inform the regulatory framework for self-driving vehicles, which is currently in progress following a call for evidence that concluded in March. London has been a hub for Uber’s key innovations, and we eagerly anticipate offering Londoners the chance to experience autonomous rides this year." Waymo currently serves riders in eleven major cities in the US, providing over 500,000 rides weekly. They are eager to introduce their state-of-the-art, fully autonomous ride-hailing service to the UK, enhancing transport safety and accessibility in London.
