Train Driver Injury During Shunting at Carstairs Station

Train driver injury occurred around 00:45 on 28 April 2026, during a shunting operation at Carstairs station in South Lanarkshire. The incident involved two segments of the Caledonian Sleeper service: train 1C11 from Edinburgh and train 1M11 from Glasgow. After coupling the two parts, the locomotive from train 1C11 was detached, allowing the combined train to proceed south towards London Euston. Following the detachment of the locomotive, both the driver and a driver assessor positioned themselves on the tracks near the locomotive for training on its coupling equipment. At that moment, train 1M11 was moving towards them. The train driver spotted the oncoming train just before it reached their location and quickly alerted the driver assessor. Both individuals attempted to escape; however, the driver was seriously injured when their hand became jammed between the train and the locomotive. Meanwhile, the driver assessor narrowly avoided injury, escaping the potential risk of being trapped. An investigation will focus on understanding the series of events that led to this train driver injury. It will explore: - The actions of everyone involved and any influencing factors. - The planning and supervision of the shunting operation. - The safety measures for staff working near the track during shunting and coupling. - How the risks associated with coupling operations were managed. - Any underlying management factors that may have contributed. This investigation is conducted independently of any review by the railway industry or the regulator, the Office of Rail and Road.
