1. Lock your doors to protect your home from burglars

If you wish to have a secure home, remember to lock your doors. Most burglars are opportunists who take advantage of a victim who fails to lock his door. Whether you are stepping out of your home for a short while or a long trip, it pays to lock your doors and windows.

2. Three locking points are thrice as good

Single locking points on external doors make it easy for burglars to break-in. Tripling that number ensures that burglars find it difficult to enter your home. They will have to spend a long time picking each lock. This increases the chance of being caught.

3. Switch fence

Forget high walls and solid fencing; think trellis or chain link fencing. It is partly true that high walls and solid fencing are necessary home security tools. Yet, they also pose a hazard to your safety and the items in your home.
High walls make it easy for burglars to break in without being seen. Once in, burglars will feel safer to act as they please because they know no one outside your home is watching. Trellises or chain link fencing are better alternatives.

4. Keys out of sight are out of mind

Keep your keys out of sight. Your window and door keys should not remain in their lock. Keys make it easy for burglars to gain entry to your home. Also try to ensure that the key to your garage and your car is as far away from the burglar as possible.

5. Join neighbourhood watch

Neighbourhood watch and other related security programs are home security essential. Be a part of any of these schemes in your neighbourhood. It pays to have extra pairs of eyes watching over your property whilst you help others do the same. This is also a useful tool for crime prevention.

6. Use bright lights and alarms

Bright lights and visible burglary alarms deter thieves. Few burglars would be bold enough to walk right into a home with good lighting. Your doorways and hidden parts of your house should have good security lighting. Also, make your burglary alarms visible so burglars can see them
A note of caution; ensure your lights and burglary alarms do not disturb neighbours. Your alarms should not last more than twenty minutes.

8. Don’t ignore spy holes

Spy-holes let you know who is at the door before opening. Having a spy-hole fitted in your external door would help you know when an unfamiliar or suspicious person is at the door.

9. Door chains should be patronized

A door chain is a good home security tool. Fit your door with chains because they give you the edge when talking to an unfamiliar person. You only have to open the door a little and can easily close it if the person seems suspicious or attempts any suspicious activity.

10. Ensure your door and window frames are in good condition

Weak door and window frames are easily removed in a break-in. So check them regularly to ensure they are still in the best possible condition.

11. Mark your property

Do something that distinguishes the items you own and can be easily identified with you.

12. Keep maintenance tools away

Don’t give burglars the tools to break into your home. Keep ladders and other tools away so they are not used by burglars to enter your property. Have them stored in a confined place that can be locked.

13. Close blinds and curtains at night

Don’t let thieves get a good peep. Draw your window blinds to protect your home from burglars. To have a secure home, window blinds should be drawn at night. This serves to prevent a burglar from having a peep in to see where you are and what you are doing or the valuable property you have in your home.

14. Get window locks

Prevent people from getting into your home by using window locks. If you are using windows without double-glazing, it is necessary to use window locks. The same applies to older windows. Window locks are key to having a secure home.
