UK Border Security Boosted with Sniffer Dogs in Bulgaria

UK border security is being reinforced through enhanced cooperation with the newly formed Bulgarian government to tackle organized migration crime. This initiative aims to safeguard Europe’s borders from the influence of smuggling operations. The new assistance was revealed by Minister for Europe, Stephen Doughty, during his discussions in Sofia with the recently inaugurated Bulgarian government, which took office just last week. Starting in September, three additional sniffer dogs will join frontline border efforts to detect and intercept small boat equipment and other illicit goods. This increase aims to expand coverage at critical border crossings and bolster European resilience against changing smuggling methods. These new dogs will amplify the success seen from the UK-supported detection dog Adele, who assisted Bulgarian authorities in seizing 48kg of cocaine at the southern border recently. As one of the busiest entry points into the EU, Bulgaria already apprehends more small boats than any other nation. Alongside Romania, Bulgaria became the latest member of the EU’s Schengen Area in 2025, which permits the free movement of people and goods within the zone without internal border checks. UK Minister of State Stephen Doughty stated: "Our cooperation with Bulgaria produces tangible results, intercepting threats well before they reach the UK. Last year, our joint efforts thwarted 91 boats, potentially carrying thousands of individuals on perilous Channel crossings. That’s why I’m in Sofia, to expand this partnership and ensure European security remains central to our collaboration with the new Bulgarian government. Strengthening relationships with EU countries is a priority for this government, as such partnerships promote greater security and growth in the UK." During his visit to Sofia, Minister Doughty observed the dedicated efforts of Bulgarian law enforcement. Besides the deployment of sniffer dogs, the UK has supplied drones to monitor illegal migration through Bulgaria’s rugged terrain, alongside endoscopes and vehicle scanning technology to expose hidden contraband and human trafficking in vehicles crossing the border. The UK’s international support is centered on early prevention and disruption, targeting criminal supply chains and fortifying borders before threats reach the UK. The enhancement of resources at the Bulgarian border follows a recent meeting in Moldova, where Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper secured commitments from 46 European partners to reform how the ECHR processes migration cases, reinforcing the UK’s capacity to take decisive action on border security. The NCA, collaborating with Home Office International Operations, partners with various international entities to seize small boat materials, including Europol, Bulgaria, Belgium, France, and Germany. Since early 2023, this collaboration has led to the seizure of over 1,000 boats and engines, preventing them from falling into the hands of criminals and disrupting the financial resources of organized crime groups. More than 500 of these were confiscated in 2025 alone. This essential effort forms part of the UK government’s strategy to strengthen ties with the EU and employs a comprehensive approach to halt small boats from reaching the Channel, undermining the abhorrent operations of criminal networks and enhancing safety. Kenny Dron, Head of Region at the National Crime Agency, shared his thoughts: "Bulgaria is a vital ally for the NCA in combating serious and organized crime, and we maintain a robust partnership with law enforcement there, frequently sharing intelligence and conducting joint operations. I’m pleased to expand our cooperation, and the introduction of these new dogs will further enhance our capability to disrupt the criminal networks that threaten the security of both our nations."
