UK Drives Guatemala’s Sustainable Urban Mobility Vision

Sustainable urban mobility took center stage on 25 May during a UK-led forum in Guatemala City, where key stakeholders gathered to share knowledge on urban mobility, infrastructure, and sustainable transport solutions, including Guatemala's Metroriel project. Hosted by the British Embassy in Guatemala, the forum emphasized the significance of government-to-government (G2G) partnerships in advancing modern urban mobility solutions. It provided a platform to discuss ways to support Guatemala's Metroriel initiative and enhance its overall transport infrastructure development. The event attracted over 100 participants from various sectors such as government, academia, private entities, civil society, and the international community. Opening remarks were made by President Bernardo Arévalo and UK Ambassador Juliana Correa, underscoring the vital role of international collaboration in executing large-scale infrastructure projects. Experts from the UK Delivery Team and representatives from DBT shared valuable insights from infrastructure projects throughout Latin America. For instance, in Peru, G2G partnerships have successfully facilitated the delivery of more than $10 billion in high-quality, socially responsible, and climate-resilient infrastructure, resulting in increased efficiency, reduced delivery times, and enhanced transparency. These partnerships deliver essential technical support and expertise, enabling nations to design and implement intricate projects while strengthening local capacities and ensuring high standards. The discussion further illuminated how this method transcends mere project execution, aiming to optimize public resource usage, mitigate risks, and bolster institutional capacities. It promotes international best practices and encourages infrastructure initiatives that yield enduring benefits for citizens. In the aftermath of the forum, discussions with key government stakeholders continued to explore collaboration opportunities.
