UK France small boats deal will see riot-trained police deployed to French beaches, following a new £662m agreement aimed at preventing illegal migrant crossings across the English Channel. On Thursday, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood signed a three-year pact with France, which includes deploying over 50 officers skilled in "riot and crowd control tactics" to address violence and "hostile crowds". The agreement allocates millions for advanced surveillance tools, including drones, helicopters, and a camera system, to intercept human smugglers and illegal migrants. For the first time, UK ministers have indicated that approximately £100m could be redirected or withheld after one year if there aren’t sufficient reductions in crossings. However, the UK government has not specified the targets France must achieve to retain this funding. Previously, under a 2023 arrangement, the UK disbursed £476m to France for additional patrols aimed at disrupting little boat smuggling networks, which included unspecified metrics for success. The plan entailed around 700 law enforcement officers patrolling French beaches and was set to expire next month. According to the Home Office, the number of officers assigned to limit attempted crossings from northern France to Britain will increase by about 42% with the new UK France small boats deal enacted this summer. The agreement will involve nearly 1,100 personnel, including law enforcement, intelligence, and military officers, tasked with preventing illegal migrants from boarding boats. France is also set to provide an additional vessel and over 20 maritime officers to target alleged "taxi boats." He cited that France only obstructed a third of embarkations last year and allowed certain illegal immigrants to attempt the journey again. Reform UK's home affairs spokesperson Zia Yusuf condemned the deal as "astonishing" and labeled it a misappropriation of taxpayer funds that could better serve in hiring thousands of new nurses or police officers in the UK. The Liberal Democrats suggest that genuinely deterring crossings requires dismantling the criminal gangs’ business model and establishing a comprehensive return agreement with France. Meanwhile, the Refugee Council argued that the issue should not solely focus on policing the Channel but on protecting vulnerable individuals seeking safety. Imran Hussain, the council's director of external affairs, stated, "Policing alone will not prevent desperate individuals from resorting to perilous small boat crossings. Without safe avenues to arrive in the UK, these individuals, men, women, and children, will continue to risk their lives." Meghan Benton, a Migration Policy Institute think tank director in Paris, remarked, "It’s not clear that additional funding and tougher targets will address safety concerns or risk aversion on the part of French authorities.
