UK’s First Optical Downlink from Space Breakthrough

Optical downlink from space has reached a significant milestone in the UK, thanks to Archangel Lightworks’ successful data transmission from a satellite via a deployable laser communications ground station for the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl). This groundbreaking demonstration paves the way for enhanced and secure communications for the UK’s armed forces. In just 90 seconds during a satellite pass, multiple gigabits of data were relayed from a low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite to an optical ground station in the Mediterranean region. This advancement is comparable to upgrading from slow internet to high-speed fiber broadband. Also referred to as free space optical communications, laser communications facilitate rapid transmissions over extended distances. This method is particularly advantageous for military operations involving Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance, where vast amounts of data need to be communicated swiftly to provide an edge against adversaries. Luke Pollard MP, Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, stated: "Space plays a vital role in our armed forces' communication systems, enabling our sailors, soldiers, and aviators to perform operations that ensure the safety of the UK and its allies. By advancing laser communications, we significantly enhance the speed and security of satellite interactions with our bases on Earth. This improvement helps shield communications from interference and grants us a strategic advantage over our opponents." Dr. Paul Hollinshead, Chief Executive of Dstl, emphasized: "Laser communications will greatly enhance the speed, volume, and security of information exchanged among our forces, whether in the air, on land, at sea, or in space. This capability will enable our forces to convey critical data more quickly than their adversaries. Our partnerships with industry stimulate innovation and position Defence as a growth engine that supports jobs and generates commercial opportunities." Dstl has collaborated closely with Archangel Lightworks, a small- to medium-sized enterprise based in Oxford, UK, which has been developing the optical ground station for this trial. This initiative illustrates Dstl’s commitment to the Defence Industrial Strategy and the Strategic Defence Review by leveraging the expertise of specialized industrial and academic partners across the UK. Using non-visible light instead of radio waves (RF), laser communications convey information with minimal power. Due to the shorter wavelengths of light, more data can be transmitted per second, making it extremely difficult to detect and intercept, significantly reducing the risk posed by enemy sensors. The precise nature of laser beams reduces the likelihood of interference with other networks and systems. Furthermore, laser communications will enhance military operations in a congested electromagnetic environment. The UK Ministry of Defence is expected to utilize this technology across various capability areas, integrating it within the UK’s digital targeting network while ensuring compatibility with the US Space Development Agency standards. Recently, Archangel Lightworks secured funding in a Series A round, which included investment from the National Security Strategic Investment Fund (NSSIF). With operations based in Oxford, the company represents a sovereign UK capability poised for increased production to meet deployment, sales, and export needs.
