Saudi Arabia labor abuse has come under scrutiny as leading UN human rights experts focus on the global issues of slavery, migration, and human trafficking. On April 29, they called for the effective abolition of the kafala (sponsorship) system, which binds workers to their sponsors for work and residency permits. Despite Saudi Arabia’s Labor Reform Initiative implemented in 2021 and the narrative cultivated by Saudi authorities regarding migrant worker welfare, experts assert that instances of exploitation have continued. These include unaccounted deaths, wage theft, workplace violence, and retention of identity documents, along with exorbitant recruitment fees.
