Jamie McElhinney, an Irish student currently on a work placement in Portugal, expresses reluctance about pursuing opportunities in the US due to recent immigration news. "I had intended to go to Boston, but news about ICE made me reconsider, it’s a significant deterrent," he acknowledges. Ireland offers a robust job market, which boasts a 74.4% employment rate; however, a growing housing crisis poses challenges, with recent protests highlighting the lack of affordable housing. Barnett comments that prospective American migrants are cautious about contributing to the housing shortage, prompting discussions about living outside urban centers. Sable, whose grandparents emigrated to the US in 1939, was able to secure an Irish passport. Notably, applications for Irish passports from the US surged by 10% in 2024, as reported by the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs. Sable now considers Ireland his true home, stating, "I find I culturally identify much more with the Irish. It’s a collective society that prioritizes community over individualism, unlike the US." Bill Hillyard, another American with Irish heritage, moved to Ireland for a cooler climate. After leaving California in the wake of 2019 wildfires, he and his wife Anne now operate a pub, The Algiers, in Baltimore, County Cork.
