Why Nature in Business Is Now a Boardroom Priority

Nature in business is now a pivotal focus for UK companies looking to save millions and tap into new growth avenues, as unveiled through fresh resources launched today. Defra, alongside industry partners, has introduced three essential tools for Board members that aim to guide and bolster action at the executive level. Among these resources is a compelling short film featuring His Majesty and Sir David Attenborough, a tailored Boardroom Briefing on Nature for Chairs and Non-Executive Directors, and a suite of case studies highlighting business initiatives across various sectors that illustrate the tangible benefits derived from engaging with nature. These materials underscore a substantial economic opportunity, with the UK's natural capital valued at approximately £1.6 trillion and an annual flow of ecosystem services pegged at around £41 billion. Moreover, in 2025, about 900 UK businesses in nature-focused sectors collectively raised £2.8 billion, creating 21,000 job opportunities. The film and case studies present real-world companies already reaping rewards from this strategic emphasis on nature in business. Severn Trent Water has rejuvenated degraded peatlands and woodlands in the Peak District, leading to an avoidance of £18 million in sediment removal expenses and saving as much as £743,000 yearly in chemical treatments. This initiative has also delayed a major infrastructure upgrade from 2033 to at least 2047. Likewise, at Canary Wharf, the transformation of an unused dock into a nature-rich public area has resulted in a 55% increase in biodiversity net gain and has driven the group's strongest leasing performance in over a decade, with 450,000 square feet of office space leased since the project's inception. Last week, His Majesty The King participated in a meeting with the Environment Secretary, the Prime Minister’s Chief Advisor on Business, Investment and Trade, senior business executives, and representatives from the Council for Sustainable Business to discuss prioritizing nature in boardroom agendas and investment strategies crucial for the UK economy. Nature Minister Mary Creagh remarked, "Over half of global GDP relies on natural resources and ecosystem services, making it essential for businesses to embrace nature-positive growth. Investment in nature safeguards profits, ensures resilient supply chains, and meets the expectations of today’s customers and investors." These new offerings deliver the necessary evidence and actionable guidance for corporate leaders to elevate nature as a strategic priority. Liv Garfield, Chair of the Council for Sustainable Business, added, "In an era of escalating climate challenges, nature will increasingly be a strategic focal point for Boards as they strategize to minimize costs, mitigate risks, and unlock new growth possibilities. These tools are crafted to facilitate this transition for Boards."
