Scotland Population Decline Triggered by Falling Migration

Scotland population decline is on the horizon as new data indicates a significant decrease in international migration. The National Records of Scotland (NRS) had initially forecasted a steady increase in the population over the next 25 years, projecting it would reach 5.8 million by 2047. However, the latest updates show that the population may peak at 5.56 million in 2033, before declining to 5.47 million by 2049. This shift is primarily attributed to a decrease in migration from previously high levels. Currently, Scotland is experiencing a record population, with numbers exceeding 5.54 million in 2024. This rise occurs despite a situation where deaths have consistently outnumbered births since 2015. Concurrently, we observe an increase in the older population, while the number of children and young adults declines." Projections, however, should not be mistaken for forecasts as they do not account for future uncertainties. A detailed analysis of the population projections indicates that the number of individuals aged 75 and older is expected to rise by over 300,000 by mid-2049. In contrast, the child population may decrease by nearly 166,000, and young adults could see a reduction of more than 157,000 during this period. Since 2015, Scotland has witnessed an annual trend where deaths outnumber births. The NRS refers to this discrepancy as "the natural change" and anticipates that it will continue to widen in the coming years due to lower birth rates and an aging population. While immigration is not a direct responsibility of the Scottish Parliament, it has become a contentious issue in the ongoing election campaign. SNP Minister Mairi McAllan stated that Scotland is receiving "too few" migrants, asserting that migration is "good and necessary" for the economy. Conversely, Reform's Thomas Kerr contended that immigration has stretched the system to its limits. During the BBC Scotland's The Sunday Show debate on the subject, other notable politicians expressed varying views. Conservative Stephen Kerr suggested that voters believe the government lacks control over immigration, whereas Liberal Democrat Christine Jardine, Labour's Michael Marra, and Patrick Harvie of the Scottish Greens maintained that immigration is irreplaceable and valuable.
