The Bluefin tuna fishery 2026 has been officially addressed by the Marine Management Organisation (MMO), which has communicated the results of the recent ballot for commercial bluefin tuna licence authorisations for this year's fishery. For the 2026 Bluefin tuna commercial fishery, the MMO received a total of 155 applications competing for just 30 available licences. The organisation followed its established assessment process as outlined in industry guidance. Isobel Johnston, MMO’s Head of Sustainable Fisheries, remarked: "This fishery continues to be highly sought after, much like in previous years. Although the UK has increased the number of available authorisations, the demand has still outstripped the opportunities. We recognize the significant benefits that the burgeoning bluefin tuna fishery brings to fishers and the coastal communities they support. However, we also understand the disappointment felt by those applicants who were not granted a licence this year." Johnston further clarified: "The framework was designed to ensure a fair allocation of quota in alignment with the objectives laid out in the Fisheries Act 2020. The application process was open solely to applicants with UK vessels measuring 12 metres or less. To maintain fairness, all identifying details, including geographical locations, were removed before applications were evaluated by a panel to determine if they fulfilled the necessary criteria. The successful applications were assigned a number and entered into the ballot." A spokesperson from Defra commented: "The MMO managed the application procedure for the bluefin tuna commercial fishery on behalf of the UK government. It is our goal to further develop this sustainable inshore fishery over the next two years. We are committed to collaborating with commercial fishermen, Devolved Governments, and Crown Dependencies to realize this ambition. We acknowledge the disappointment for those applicants who were not successful."
