£340M Pharmacy Boost Delivers Faster Care on High Streets

Pharmacy boost will provide patients throughout England with enhanced services, improved treatments, and better access to medications at their local pharmacies, backed by a new £340 million government-funded initiative. With the introduction of this new contractual framework, pharmacists who possess an independent prescribing qualification will be empowered to evaluate patients and prescribe medications directly. This builds upon the success of the Pharmacy First service, which offers immediate care for prevalent conditions while allowing patients to access a broader array of medicines. Scheduled to launch in autumn 2026, these changes are set to minimize referrals to GPs, enhancing efficiency and elevating both patient experiences and outcomes. Additionally, it will alleviate pressure on hospitals, enabling patients to receive ongoing treatment for common conditions from a qualified pharmacist in their communities, thereby reducing the necessity to visit urgent care centers or A&E departments. During the period from March 2025 to February 2026, over 3.3 million consultations occurred under the Pharmacy First initiative, reflecting a remarkable 43% increase compared to the previous year. Almost 90% (86%) of participants reported a positive experience when seeking support at their pharmacy for one of the seven common conditions addressed by this program. The £340 million funding package and the implementation of independent prescribing have been coordinated with Community Pharmacy England. This announcement follows a record level of investment over the past two years, along with a series of measures aimed at extending services to patients, including: - Providing the ‘morning-after pill’ at no charge through NHS pharmacies for the first time, effectively eliminating the postcode lottery for women in need and addressing inequalities. - Offering convenient support at pharmacies for patients dealing with depression when prescribed antidepressants, thereby enhancing mental health support within communities. - Streamlining processes to facilitate easier access to consultations, empowering more pharmacy staff to deliver a wider variety of services such as medicines advice, Pharmacy First consultations for minor conditions, and performing blood pressure checks. - Increasing incentives for pharmacists to identify patients with undiagnosed high blood pressure. - Augmenting funding for medicine supply ensuring better access to prescribed medications. Under the Pharmacy First initiative, patients currently receive advice, over-the-counter treatments, and prescription-only medications through patient group directions, which guide the supply or administration of medicines. This covers a range of minor health conditions related to the ears, nose, throat, eyes, and skin, among others. It offers quick access for patients right on their high street while alleviating pressure from GPs. Community pharmacies play a pivotal role in the 10 Year Health Plan, shifting care from hospitals to community settings as part of neighborhood health services.
