Salmonella Cases in England Surge to 10-Year Peak

Salmonella cases in England have reached a decade-high, according to new data released by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). The agency urges the public to remain vigilant against these bacteria, which are leading contributors to food poisoning. Young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems must take special precautions, as they face a heightened risk of serious health complications. In 2025, Salmonella cases slightly rose from 10,389 in 2024 to 10,406, making it the highest count in ten years, though it remains relatively steady compared to the previous year. On the other hand, Campylobacter infections in 2025 stabilized at levels akin to 2024, despite a minor decline from 70,392 in 2024 to 69,394 in 2025. Both Campylobacter and Salmonella infections typically stem from consuming contaminated food, such as poultry, meat, eggs, raw fruits, and vegetables, as well as unpasteurized dairy products. Close contact with an infected person, particularly in household environments, and cross-contamination in the kitchen are also notable transmission routes. Listeriosis cases have remained stable over previous years, with 181 reported cases in England and Wales in 2025, compared to 179 in 2024. This infection is caused by Listeria monocytogenes bacteria, which is usually transmitted through contaminated raw, chilled, or ready-to-eat foods. Most listeriosis patients experience no symptoms or only mild stomach issues. However, the infection can be severe for older adults, immunocompromised individuals, and those with pre-existing health conditions. In pregnant women, listeriosis can result in miscarriage, stillbirth, or serious illness in newborns. Data indicate that the highest number of listeriosis cases occurred in individuals aged 80 and older. In 2025, there were 141 non-pregnancy-associated listeriosis cases, resulting in 28 fatalities (19.9%). Additionally, 40 pregnancy-associated cases, making up about 20% of the total, were reported, and nearly a third (31.4%) of these resulted in stillbirths or miscarriages. The number of Cryptosporidium cases in England saw a significant drop from 5,703 in 2024 to 4,149 in 2025, a decrease of 1,554 cases (27.2%). This return to pre-pandemic levels also reflects a reversal of the increased figures from 2023 and 2024. Notably, outbreaks associated with farm settings and lamb contact events remain problematic, with 18 outbreaks reported in 2025. Symptoms common to these gastrointestinal infections include diarrhea (which can be bloody), stomach cramps, vomiting, and mild fever. While most individuals recover within one to two weeks, young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems face a greater risk of severe complications. Dr. Gauri Godbole, Deputy Director for Gastrointestinal Infections at UKHSA, stated, "We are witnessing consistently elevated levels of gastrointestinal infections in England. Our ongoing collaboration with partners aims to identify, investigate, and halt the spread of these infections." Dr. Godbole emphasized the various transmission avenues of these infections, including contaminated food and water, contact with infected individuals, and interaction with infected animals or environments. To prevent infection, thorough handwashing with soap and water is crucial, especially after using the toilet, handling raw meat, eating, and coming into contact with animals or farming environments. Individuals experiencing diarrhea or vomiting should refrain from preparing food for others and should avoid returning to work or sending children to school or nursery until at least 48 hours after symptoms stop. Dr. James Cooper, Deputy Director of Food Policy at the Food Standards Agency, remarked, "Ensuring public safety is our utmost priority. We are closely working with UKHSA and other partners to understand the increase in Campylobacter and Salmonella cases, allowing us to implement necessary measures to protect public health." He encouraged consumers to regularly check Food Hygiene Ratings at food.gov.uk while dining out and emphasized the importance of home food safety practices.
