Tim De Meyer Appointment Confirmed for Sentencing Council Role

Tim De Meyer appointment has been officially approved by the Lord Chancellor, who has decided to extend his role as a policing member of the Sentencing Council. This appointment will last from 1 July 2026 until either a successor is appointed or 30 June 2027, whichever comes first. In making this appointment without competition, Ministers consulted the Commissioner for Public Appointments. His background includes operational and strategic roles within the Metropolitan Police and Thames Valley Police. In 2023, he rose to the position of Chief Constable of Surrey Police. Since 2019, Tim has served as the National Police Chiefs’ Council lead for the Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act Disclosure, playing a significant role in shaping national policy as part of the Criminal Justice Coordination Committee. Tim De Meyer has no declared political activity, reinforcing the impartiality expected of a Sentencing Council member. The Sentencing Council for England and Wales was established to enhance transparency and uniformity in sentencing while safeguarding judicial independence. Its primary function is to create guidelines for sentencing, which courts must follow unless it serves justice not to do so.
