Foreign Secretary Unites Nations to End Violence against Women

End Violence against Women: Women and girls globally will gain enhanced protection from violence and abuse through a new international initiative led by the UK. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper is set to announce this significant effort today at the Global Partnerships Conference in London. This new coalition unites eight countries focused on preventing violence, ensuring women and girls can live without fear irrespective of their location or circumstances. Member nations will implement tangible actions to combat domestic abuse and sexual violence, which impacts 1 in 3 women worldwide, alongside addressing the rise in online abuse across the globe. Founding members of this coalition include the UK, South Africa, Brazil, Morocco, Spain, Jamaica, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Australia. Amidst growing global conflicts, the International Coalition will also aim to enhance worldwide measures against sexual violence in conflict zones and other forms of violence during humanitarian crises. The UK plans to host a major summit next year to confront violence against women and girls, providing countries an opportunity to establish further commitments and assess their progress. The UK Government has already initiated the most extensive campaign against violence towards women and girls in British history. The goal is to halve these incidents within a decade, accompanied by critical policies such as Raneem’s Law, which integrates domestic abuse specialists into 999 control rooms. The Foreign Secretary has translated her domestic strategies into international policy by prioritizing the safety of women and girls at the FCDO and preserving funding for initiatives that confront violence against women and girls despite financial challenges. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper stated: "Violence against women and girls is a global emergency, not merely a national one. We are committed to transcending borders to ensure women’s safety becomes a global priority. In February, I visited the Sudanese border and heard firsthand about the horrors of rape, abduction, and disgusting sexual violence. I will amplify their voices and strive to eliminate violence for every single one of them—and for the 1 in 3 women worldwide who will face sexual or physical abuse in their lifetime. I’m thrilled to launch this Coalition with nations that share our vision. Women deserve to live free from the fear of violence, from the UK to Brazil, South Africa, and beyond. There can be no peace, security, or prosperity until this is achieved." Through this Coalition, countries will exchange best practices and formulate national action plans aimed at preventing violence, safeguarding women and girls, and holding offenders accountable. Yesterday, Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper visited Lewisham Police Station with UK Safeguarding Minister Natalie Fleet and Spanish Secretary of State for International Cooperation. They engaged with Met police officers and observed demonstrations of the V100 program—a groundbreaking digital risk assessment using counter-terrorism methods to identify and manage the most perilous offenders of Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) in London. Minister for Safeguarding and Violence Against Women and Girls Natalie Fleet remarked: "Violence against women and girls is a global crisis that necessitates action beyond mere rhetoric. We must forge a united international front to create a world where women and girls feel safe from harm. I am proud to stand beside our global partners who are dedicated to this cause. However, we won't stop here; we will leverage the full capabilities of the UK government to reduce violence against women and girls by half within a decade." The launch coincides with the introduction of the UK’s new International Strategic Framework on Women and Girls, outlining how the UK will advocate for women's rights worldwide. This strategy integrates these goals into diplomacy, trade, security, and development efforts, utilizing UK partnerships to foster progress. This Framework emphasizes a robust commitment to placing women and girls at the center of all initiatives, pledging that at least 90% of FCDO bilateral Official Development Assistance (ODA) will focus on gender equality by 2030.
