Nationwide Muslim War Memorial Design Competition Launched

The Muslim War Memorial initiative has officially launched today, May 27th, seeking an organization to design and construct a national tribute highlighting the significant role of Muslims during the First and Second World Wars. This memorial will serve as a lasting homage to the bravery and sacrifices of the hundreds of thousands of Muslim soldiers who fought alongside Britain and its allies, coming from regions such as the Middle East, North Africa, and the Indian subcontinent to secure victory and foster enduring peace. Despite the presence of approximately 70,000 war memorials throughout the UK, including notable tributes to other faith groups’ contributions in the 20th century, this will be the first national acknowledgment specifically dedicated to Muslim soldiers who valiantly served and sacrificed for Britain. The memorial will feature numerous inspiring stories. One notable figure is Khudadad Khan, the first Muslim recipient of the Victoria Cross. In 1914, at Hollebeke, Belgium, he continued to operate his machine gun alone after losing his comrades, despite being seriously injured. Left for dead, he crawled back to his regiment under the cover of darkness and resumed fighting. King George V later awarded him the Victoria Cross at Buckingham Palace. Another remarkable account is of Shahamad Khan, who received the Victoria Cross for exceptional valor in Mesopotamia in April 1916. He single-handedly manned a machine gun just yards from enemy positions, repelling three counterattacks after most of his unit had become casualties. When his machine gun was rendered inoperable, he maintained his defense with rifles until ordered to withdraw, personally carrying back his gun, ammunition, and a badly wounded comrade. During World War II, Mohammed Hussain left his home in Rawalpindi at just 16 to enlist in the British Indian Army. He served as a machine gunner at Monte Cassino, one of the fiercest battles of the war. After moving to the UK in 1960, he dedicated himself to community service, supporting fellow veterans and their families until his passing in 2025 at the age of 102. Nesil Caliskan, Minister for Faith and Communities, emphasized the rich diversity of the UK, stating, "Our country is made up of a strong, diverse tapestry of different faith communities – and we owe that freedom to the bravery and sacrifice made by those who fought alongside us for a better future all those years ago." Caliskan also noted, "Muslim soldiers were crucial in securing victory, but their contributions have been overlooked for too long. This memorial will ensure their stories are remembered today and for future generations." The Muslim War Memorial will not only honor these extraordinary individuals but will also highlight the ongoing contributions of Muslims to British society today. From politicians to athletes and healthcare professionals to educators, Muslim communities play an integral role in every aspect of national life.
