The coalition to end violence against women and girls in South Africa and globally has been officially launched today at the Global Partnerships Conference in London, co-hosted by the United Kingdom and South Africa. This international initiative aims to combat violence and abuse against women and girls around the world. Spearheaded by UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, the coalition comprises eight founding nations, including South Africa. It embodies a collaborative vision shared by the UK and South Africa, prioritizing development through partnership, mutual respect, and country-led initiatives with a strong orientation toward social inclusion and safeguarding the most vulnerable populations. This effort builds upon the UK’s persistent collaboration with South Africa through its Gender-Based Violence and Femicide Response Fund, which supports prevention initiatives, survivor services, and community-centered projects. Globally, one in three women experiences violence, highlighting the pressing need for a coalition to end violence against women. In South Africa, where gender-based violence is a significant national concern, this coalition enhances ongoing initiatives to prevent domestic abuse and address sexual violence, as well as emerging threats like online harm. Member countries, including the UK, South Africa, Brazil, Morocco, Spain, Jamaica, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Australia, will collaborate on several key objectives: - Augment prevention strategies through community-based and inclusive societal approaches. - Fortify protection systems for women and girls. - Exchange expertise and best practices across borders. - Enhance accountability measures for violators of violence against women. The coalition will also address violence in conflict and humanitarian contexts, taking into account the heightened risks faced by women and girls in fragile and crisis-stricken areas. This announcement aligns with the broader goals of the Global Partnerships Conference, reinforcing the belief that sustainable development must encompass social inclusion, robust institutions, and the safeguarding of human rights. Ending violence against women is pivotal for attaining these objectives. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper stated: "Violence against women and girls is a global emergency, not just a national one. We are committed to transcending borders to prioritize women's safety on a worldwide scale. I am thrilled to launch this Coalition with nations that share our vision. From the UK to Brazil to South Africa and beyond, women deserve to live without the fear of violence. Peace, security, and prosperity for all are contingent on this reality." Looking forward, the UK plans to host a global summit in 2027 aimed at tracking progress and fostering additional commitments, with coalition members encouraged to develop and enhance national action plans. This initiative complements broader UK efforts to combat violence against women and girls, including a pledge to reduce such crimes domestically by half within a decade, alongside sustained international funding for prevention, protection, and response programs.
