Librela Injection for Dogs: Latest SPC Update Revealed

Librela Injection for Dogs has undergone an important update in the Summary of Product Characteristics (SPC), reflecting the latest pharmacovigilance data. The SPC for Librela 5mg, 10mg, 15mg, 20mg, and 30mg Solutions for Injection for Dogs in Great Britain has been revised to include new information regarding adverse events. In Section 4.6, it is now indicated that rare cases of joint swelling, joint pain, bone and joint disorders, as well as soft tissue ossification, have been reported after treatment with Librela for dogs. Detailed information is provided in the accompanying footnote. New bone formation, often coupled with joint swelling and/or pain, has been observed following repeated Librela administration. This may affect the periosteum, joint capsule, and surrounding soft tissues. Diagnosed radiographically or through cross-sectional imaging, it presents as extensive, irregular periosteal and ectopic mineralized tissue formation that extends beyond the normal chondro-osseous borders into the metaphyseal and, in certain cases, diaphyseal areas of adjacent bones. Bone alterations such as focal osteolysis or erosions can also occur. These changes may appear unilaterally or bilaterally, can involve multiple joints, and might be progressive. In very rare instances, these changes have been associated with fractures. Moreover, a new precaution concerning the use of Librela has been added to Section 4.5 (Special precautions for use in animals). If a dog exhibits new or worsening joint swelling and/or joint pain post-treatment with Librela (refer to section 4.6), veterinary professionals should consider additional diagnostics and may need to discontinue treatment on a case-by-case basis.
