APHA Plant Threats Uncovered at RHS Chelsea Flower Show

APHA plant threats took center stage at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, an essential annual event in the UK horticultural calendar that attracts a worldwide audience. This year’s show, held from May 19 to 23, marked the eleventh consecutive year that the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) showcased its work, bringing home numerous awards for its significant contributions. APHA's exhibit, titled ‘Scents and Sensors’ – Sniffing Out Plant Pests and Diseases, focuses on highlighting advancements in horticultural science and technology, located in the GreenSTEM section of the Great Pavilion. Visitors can delve into APHA's current initiatives to identify threats from plant pests and diseases, as well as ongoing research aimed at developing innovative solutions to combat these pressing issues. The exhibit emphasizes the olfactory sense, demonstrating how science utilizes smell to track down plant pests and diseases. Attendees can discover the roles of trained detector dogs, electronic noses, and even test their own sense of smell at interactive stations. Participants will gain insights into traditional and high-tech methods for spotting pests, identifying the most vulnerable plant species, and understanding the pests and diseases that pose significant risks. Practical takeaways include biosecurity tips that will enhance efforts to safeguard the UK from alarming plant threats and guidance on prevention, detection, and management strategies. Richard Lewis, APHA's Chief Executive, stated: “I’m proud of the work we do to screen imported plants, fresh produce, and plant products to prevent plant pests and diseases from entering the country, and here at Chelsea Flower Show ensuring the plants entering the show are free from pests and diseases. “Our exhibit this year is a fantastic showcase of some of that work—demonstrating the innovative solutions and technologies that are being developed to better protect the UK from destructive plant pests and pathogens in the future.” Innovations showcased support the efforts of APHA’s Plant Health and Seeds Inspectors, whose inspection of imported plants at borders is a critical line of defense against plant pest and disease threats. Early identification is paramount to controlling outbreaks and preventing wider spread. Once again, APHA’s exhibit received a gold medal from the RHS and was recognized as the best GreenSTEM exhibit, a remarkable achievement.
