Applicants for the 2021 session are to develop new ideas and voices on addressing the long-standing and new challenges in the world.

The prize recognizes outstanding original essays on topics related to international issues. It focuses on topics that draw on educational research and intend to influence policy debates.

Eligibility

  • Eligible Countries/ Regions: All students from various countries and regions.
  • Gender Restrictions: No age restrictions.
  • Age Restrictions: No gender restrictions.

General Requirements

Applicants are to;  

  • Submit original essays between 4,000 and 5,000 words based on their academic program.
  • Submit their essays in a proper format appropriate for publication in foreign affairs.
  • Apply if international scholars. 
  • Be scholars at the University of Pennsylvania. This includes scholars of junior faculty, postdocs, and advanced Ph.D. candidates.
  • Note that tenured faculty are ineligible.
  • Apply if they completed the relevant terminal degree in their field of study in 2015 or after that, e.g., a J.D.
  • Make one submission per contender.
  • Submissions can be co-authored. But, all co-authors must meet the eligibility requirements.
  • Note that if a co-authored and a submission receives the prize, the authors are to split the award. 

Scholarship Value

  • Scholars will get a $10,000 prize. The prize is to encourage the scholars to make their academic work more accessible to policymakers in positions of influence and advance policy debates on significant global issues.
  • Each contender will have their essay published by foreign affairs, online and in print.

Prizes will be based on the research theme, Global Shifts: Urbanization, Migration, and Demography

Application Instructions

  • The essay can be single-authored or co-authored.
  • The essay’s underlying academic scholarship is based on formats that include a published or forthcoming article/chapter, unpublished academic manuscripts, etc.
  • Curriculum vitae.

Note: A panel of judges will select the winners. Submissions will be judged based on;

  • policy relevance,
  • writing quality,
  • the importance of the policy challenge,
  • the feasibility of its policy recommendations,
  • the quality of the underlying academic scholarship.
