APHA Wildlife Science Center Celebrates 50 Years of Innovation

APHA wildlife science is celebrating its 50th anniversary at the Animal and Plant Health Agency’s (APHA) National Wildlife Management Centre located in Woodchester Park, Gloucestershire. This institution has played a pivotal role in safeguarding animals, humans, and the environment through significant wildlife science research. At the centre, a dedicated team of scientists, veterinarians, ecologists, and pathologists collaborates to address the interconnected realms of wildlife health, farm animal health, human health, and environmental safeguarding. Over half a century, their important research has addressed numerous urgent challenges impacting nature and agriculture. Key achievements in APHA wildlife science include the development of badger vaccination initiatives to mitigate the risk of bovine TB to both wildlife and livestock. Additionally, they monitor emerging diseases in wildlife to prevent potential threats to farming and public health, track environmental hazards caused by pollutants and toxins, and combat invasive non-native species. Notably, over 75% of emerging diseases stem from animals, which places the APHA at the forefront of initiatives aimed at protecting both human and wildlife health. The scientists adhere to a “One Health” philosophy, working closely with the UK Health Security Agency. Through the government's efforts towards maintaining biosecurity, the UK can avert substantial economic repercussions from possible devastating diseases. APHA also supports extensive research on the impacts of climate change on diseases and biodiversity, partnering with universities and institutions worldwide. To commemorate this landmark APHA facility anniversary, the agency has joined forces with Wild in Art and the National Trust to present an engaging twist on the classic tale Wind in the Willows. The initiative features a trail comprising life-sized sculptures of beloved characters such as Toad, Mole, Ratty the Water Vole, and Badger, designed to highlight contemporary wildlife conservation efforts and inspire visitors to become “Wildlife Warriors.” This initiative includes an exciting lineup of events, exhibitions, and educational opportunities throughout the year. The Wind in the Willows Trail, launched in collaboration with Wild in Art and the National Trust, began at Anglesey Abbey on March 28 and is currently hosted at Woodchester Park until June 28. Wild in Art is also developing a Family Activity Book, available at visitor gift shops, along with downloadable activity sheets, and a selection of Paint Your Own Badger, Mole, Toad, and Ratty figurines, encouraging visitors to create personal souvenirs of their trail experience. The mission of Wild in Art is to democratize art, making it accessible to all segments of the public. In addition, Stroud’s Museum in the Park (Stratford Park, Stroud) has collaborated with APHA to curate a photographic exhibition showcasing iconic wildlife images that reflect the Agency’s vital work.
