The Moth Short Story Prize is an international award that is open to anyone with an original short story that has not been published before. The winner of the Moth Short Story Prize work is read anonymously, as it is chosen by a single judge each year.

  • Gender Restrictions: No gender restrictions
  • Age Restrictions: Minimum age is 16 years

General Requirements

  • Entries for the Moth Short Story Prize must be entirely the aspirant’s work and must never have been published, broadcast, self-published, or published online.
  • Applicants for the Moth Short Story Prize can submit as many stories as he/she can write.
  • Stories for the prize must not exceed 5000 words per story.

Award Value

  • The attractive Moth Short Story Prize of €3,000 goes to the winner of the campaign.
  • The second prize goes with a week-long writing retreat at the Circle of Misse in France. The award also includes €250 for travel expenses
  • The third-place winner of the Moth Short Story Prize will bag €1,000.

Application Instructions

Applicants for the Moth Short Story Prize should follow the following instructions before applying:

  • Applicants who are writing a story must ensure they include their name as the author on the same page as the story.
  • Applicants are advised to purchase a copy of THE MOTH.
  • Entries for the Moth Short Story Prize must be in English language and typed with each entry on a new sheet.
  • Applicants’ name or address should not appear on the same page as the story.
  • Entries for the Moth Short Story Prize will not be returned, so applicants should make sure they provide a copy for themselves.
  • No corrections will be made after submitting. Neither will fees be refunded.
