MSK Patient Care Accelerated for Faster Recovery and Return

MSK patient care is set to improve significantly for thousands suffering from conditions like arthritis and back pain, thanks to the nationwide implementation of a government pilot program. This initiative, bolstered by over £3 million in funding, expands NHS England's successful Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) MSK Community Delivery Programme, which previously achieved a 20% reduction in 18-week waiting lists across 17 areas between December 2024 and March 2025. The new funding will facilitate MSK community appointment days—innovative one-day clinics where healthcare specialists, mental health professionals, and physical activity services collaborate to provide comprehensive care during a single visit. This approach aims to streamline treatments and enhance patient experience. Additionally, 'super clinics' will be established to quickly boost clinical capacity, delivering personalized clinical diagnostics and targeted therapies swiftly. Funding will be prioritized for regions experiencing the highest demand, aiming to alleviate the existing postcode lottery and enhance local services where help is most needed. Sharon Hodgson, Minister for Public Health and Prevention, expressed her excitement about the national rollout of this effective program. She highlighted the urgency for tackling lengthy waits for painful MSK conditions, noting that quicker care not only enhances patient outcomes but also improves employment prospects. This rollout is particularly vital as it addresses inherited long wait times for community MSK care, integrating health specialists, employment advisors, and support services within one appointment to simplify the patient journey. MSK conditions impact nearly 18 million people in England, making them a leading cause of health-related economic inactivity, with around 100,000 individuals currently unable to work due to MSK issues. Furthermore, over half a million people who are economically inactive because of health issues report having an MSK condition. The program underscores the importance of integrating work and health support into standard community MSK care, aligning with government initiatives aimed at boosting economic activity and enabling individuals to return to work. Dame Diana Johnson MP, Minister for Employment, noted that this investment is poised to benefit hundreds of thousands of people across England. By connecting MSK services more directly with employment support, the program eases recovery and fosters job re-entry. The previous pilot, which ran from December 2024 to March 2025, demonstrated that faster and more efficient community MSK care is achievable through data utilization, benchmarking, and innovative working methods that reduce waiting times. Innovative approaches in the pilot included the use of digital tools for remote patient management. The new funding aims to replicate this success on a national scale. Clinical leaders will be appointed throughout health systems to advocate for best practices, standardize care quality, and ensure that employment support is routinely integrated into treatment plans. Professor Tim Briggs, NHS England and GIRFT Chair, commended the program's expansion. He noted that MSK conditions account for significant absenteeism and economic inactivity, and that this rollout will enable more patients to receive quicker, high-quality care, combining clinical services with employment and community support to facilitate recovery and reintegration into daily life. Sue Hayward-Giles from the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy welcomed the increased focus on MSK health, emphasizing that quicker access to expert assessments and treatments will effectively reduce waiting lists and promote work retention or re-entry. This initiative aligns with the government's overarching mission to enhance NHS care in communities, cut waiting times, and enhance the quality of life for citizens. It complements broader employment support strategies aimed at tackling economic inactivity. Fergal Monsell, President of the British Orthopaedic Association, stressed the crucial need for access to high-quality care for MSK patients to regain their independence and work capabilities. Deborah Alsina MBE, Chief Executive of Arthritis UK, acknowledged the ongoing issues with waiting times for community MSK care and expressed her appreciation for the funding emphasis. She called for uniform access to timely treatment and effective local clinical leadership, backed by ongoing government commitment and workforce training. A total investment of £3.225 million has been allocated for this initiative, which is jointly managed by the Department of Health and Social Care, NHS England's GIRFT, and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
